Zhunan Station platform
Zhunan Station (Chinese: 竹南車站; Hanyu Pinyin: Zhúnán Chēzhàn; Tongyong Pinyin: Jhúnán Chejhàn), is a railway station of Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) Western Line located in Zhunan Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan. It lies at the northern junction of the Mountain and Coast Lines of the Western Line.
Overview
The station has three island platforms. Although it is a first-class station, the Taroko Express, a variant of the Tzu-Chiang Limited Express which passes through the Taichung Line (Mountain Line), does not stop at this station.
History
Former Zhunan Station building
- August 10, 1902: The station first opened for service as Chūkō-eki (Japanese: 中港驛). It was a wooden station building.
- May 25, 1903: The section to Miaoli opened for service.
- October 1, 1920: The station name was changed to "Zhunan Station".
- Due to its location on the Coastal Line, the station was upgraded to a first-class station.
- March 1, 1931: The section between Taipei and Zhunan becomes double-tracked.
- November 6, 1935: Due to the earthquake on April 24, 1935, the station is reconstructed as a concrete building.
- April 1943: The new southern station building is constructed.
- September 1949: The new northern station building is constructed.
- May 22, 1995: As part of the double-tracking construction for the Mountain Line, the station structure is demolished.
- January 1, 1997: The new station opens for service.
- 2001: The southern station building is demolished and relocated to Jiji.
- November 2007: The northern part of the new station is completed.
- January 2009: The southern part of the new station is completed.
- August 15, 2009: The entire station is completed and begins service.
- February 26, 2011: Due to the celebration of the Taiwan Lantern Festival, the station sets a single-day record of 160,000 passengers.
