Solar cycle 3 was the third solar cycle since 1755, when extensive recording of solar sunspot activity began.[1][2] The solar cycle lasted 9.3 years, beginning in June 1775 and ending in September 1784. The maximum smoothed sunspot number (monthly number of sunspots averaged over a twelve-month period) observed during the solar cycle was 158.5 (May 1778), and the minimum was 9.5.[3] The maximum is identical with that of solar cycle 22, where the peak of 158.5 occurred in July 1989, making it the equal third highest peak on record.[4]
William Herschel began observing sunspots during this period.[5]
