North Oakley is a hamlet in the civil parish of Hannington in the Basingstoke and Deane district of Hampshire, England. Its nearest town is Tadley, which lies approximately 6.4 miles (10.3 km) north-east from the village.
Governance
The hamlet of North Oakley is part of the civil parish of Hannington,[1] and is part of the Kingsclere ward of Basingstoke and Deane borough council.[2] The borough council is a Non-metropolitan district of Hampshire County Council.
Tidgrove
- 1086 manor of Titegrave (Tidgrove) in Domesday Book.
- 1172 The Sheriff of Hampshire claimed credit for an expenditure of £31 9s. 7d. on the king's houses at Tidgrove.
- 1176 Wine sent to Tidgrove on the orders of Henry II.
- 1177 The Sheriff of Hampshire claimed credit for £7 16s. for the work on the king's chapel at Tidgrove.
- 1178 Further work to the buildings at Tidgrove at a cost of £24 18s in preparation for the king's visit the following year.
- 1180-1183 King's houses at Freemantle (Tidgrove name change) under construction.

Tidgrove '100 acres in the Parish of Kingsclere, abutting on the King's highway from Kingsclere to Oakley on the East part and upon Palampton [Polhampton] ground on the West part, and Okeleye Down on the South part, and on the land called Wakeridge [Walkeridge] on the North part' belonged to Sandleford priory and then to the Dean and Canons of Windsor of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, as shown by some surviving leases:
- 21 June 1499. Lease by Master Christopher Vrsewyk, Clerk, Dean of the College of Windsor, and the Canons to John Gobarde of Kyngesclere [ Kingsclere ], in the County of Southampton, Mercer, and Cecilia, his wife, of a pasture called Tydgrove [Tidgrove] in Kyngesclere for 30 years at a rental of 23s. 4d. and also 10 couples of conies (cuniculi) annually.[3]
- 4 November 1616.[4] Lease of pastures called Tydgrave [Tidgrove] 100 acres in the Parish of King Cleere [Kingsclere], Hants, abutting on the King's highway from King's Clere to Okeley on the East part and upon Palampton ground on the West part, and Okeleye Down on the South part, and on the land called Wakeridge on the North part (woods reserved), by the Dean and Canons of Windsor to William Knight of Kingsclere, yeoman. Counterpart. With Bond for £10.
- 28 August 1632. A rental made and renued by John Deane, of the manor of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, called Eastenborne [ East Enborne ], with all members and appurtenances, and of all their lands, tenements etc. in Enborne, Newberie [Newbury] and Grenham, and in Newtowne Newtown, Hampshire, Kingescleere [Kingsclere], Tidgave and Pamber, within the collection of the said John Deane their Baylif and Receiver there, in the time of Master John Ellis, one of the Canons of Windsor and their Steward.[5]
- 7 May 1684.[6] Renewal of lease of pasture called Tydgrave [Tidgrove] 100 acres in the Parish of King Cleere [Kingsclere], Hants, abutting on the King's highway from King's Clere to Okeley on the East part and upon Palampton ground on the West part, and Okeleye Down on the South part, and on the land called Wakeridge on the North part (woods reserved), by the Dean and Canons of Windsor to Peter White of Tidgrave, in the Parish of Kings Clere, yeoman. Counterpart.
- 1 November 1712.[7] Surrender of lease dated 6 December 1705, of pastures called Tydgrave [Tidgrove] 100 acres in the Parish of King Cleere [Kingsclere], Hants, abutting on the King's highway from King's Clere to Okeley [Oakley] on the East part and upon Palampton ground on the West part, and Okeleye Down on the South part, and on the land called Wakeridge on the North part (woods reserved), by John White for renewal to William Soper.
- 4 December 1740.[8] Lease of pastures called Tydgrave [Tidgrove] 100 acres in the Parish of King Cleere [Kingsclere], Hants, abutting on the King's highway from King's Clere to Okeley on the East part and upon Palampton ground on the West part, and Okeleye Down on the South part, and on the land called Wakeridge on the North part (woods reserved), by the Dean and Canons of Windsor to Richard Soper of North Oakley, in the Parish of Kingscleer, Gentleman, and William Dicker of Court Farm, in the Parish of Overton, in the County of Southampton, Gentleman, Executors of William Soper, late of Tidgrave, Gentleman.
The above might refer to the land described below in this thirteenth century grant and confirmations of grant:
- Grant by John Lancelee to Bartholomew Croc of land in Hanitun [Hannington], formerly held by Adam Scuir at a rental of 6s. 2d.; and a pair of spurs value 6d. to Dan Roger Lanceleuee Lord of the fee. The said Bartholomew to pasture certain flocks free of pannage, and paving beforehand 4 and a half marks. Witnesses: Henry de Wudecott, Thomas Croc, Walter de Wudecott, William de Edmundesstrop, Richard de Borran, John de Wulton, Richard de Quercu, John his brother of Wudecott, John son of Roger Lanceleuee, Richard Croc, Joceus servant of the Prior of Sandelford [Sandleford].[9]
- Confirmation by Sir Roger Lanceleueye to the Church of Saint John the Baptist of Sandulford [Sandleford] and the Prior and Canons there, of the gift of Sir John Lanceleueye [Lanceleue], his father, and Bartholomew Croc of land in his fee of Haniton [ Hannington ], at the payment of half a mark and royal service. Witnesses: Sir William de Wintershelle, Philip Croc, Henry de Wudecote, Richard de Portelye, Knights, Baudewyn de Caune, Alan de Sutton, Geoffrey de la Strode, bailiff of Clere.[10]
- Confirmation by John Launceleue, son and heir of Roger Launceleue, to the Prior and Canons of the Church of John the Baptist, Sandleford, of land which they have of the gift of Bartholomew Croc in his fee in Hamtun [Hannington]. Witnesses: Sir Herbert de Caune, Sir Henry de Wodechot, Sir Thomas de Gimmiges, Sir Richard de Cardeuile, Ralph le Faukener, Gilbert Kernet, Richard de Quercu.[11]
