Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), formerly known as Nagpur University, is a public state university, established on August 4, 1923 in the city of Nagpur in Maharashtra state in central India. It is one of the oldest universities in India and the second oldest in the state of Maharashtra, after the University of Mumbai. Named after Tukdoji Maharaj, its focus has been on teaching Indian languages like Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi and Urdu besides other subjects like medical sciences, general sciences, arts, commerce and engineering. The university has been offering medical degrees since 1947. The university was divided and some of its facilities were rededicated to the creation of the Amravati University on May 1, 1983. To reduce the load of administering a large number of colleges under it, the university was again divided to create the Gondwana University, in September 2011. It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.[1] It has been accredited with the 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), New Delhi. It is now labeled as one of the best universities in the country due to its strict assessment and extremely high standards of academia. It has also been ranked among some of the top Universities in India.
Jurisdiction
Initially the university had a jurisdiction extending over 11 districts of eastern Maharashtra particularly called Vidarbha. With the establishment of Amravati University in Amravati in 1983, the jurisdiction was restricted to six districts : Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Bhandara and Gondia. Out of these, two districts - Chandrapur and Gadchiroli are attached to the Gondwana University established in September 2011.
History
The Nagpur University was established on 4 August 1923 with six affiliated colleges and 927 students. During 1947, the number of students increased to about 9000 accompanied by the improvement and diversification of curricula and expansion in the range of subjects. The expansion of library and sports facilities occurred during these years for the intellectual and physical well being of the students.
It was in 1958 that some new Departments in Arts and Social Science faculties were opened; the major expansion, however, came in 1963 when several science and other teaching Departments were started. The Departments were shifted to spacious buildings in the main campus in 1972-73. In later years, several career oriented courses have been started viz., Business Management, Fine Arts, Mass Communication, Library Science, Physical Education, etc. In 2011 the university was again divided to part way for the Gondwana University.
