Muharram museum
Muharram museum is an anthropological museums in Tabriz, in the East Azerbaijan province, Iran. As it is known, anthropology is the study of people’s culture, hence Muharram ceremonies which are arisen from the heart of Shi'ite, involve the important fields of anthropological studies. Muharram ceremonies represent the quarrel of good and evil, oppressor and oppressed and the most important point they stand for Ashura. As a whole, it can be considered that the ceremonies held in Muharram all are symbolic.
What are displayed at Muharram museum symbolize all the ceremonies and traditions of Muharrem in East Azerbaijan province. All are the elements of culture that strengthen the culture of the society. The signs and symbols are representing something beyond themselves, they could be abstract or natural but the signs, that considered here, are cultural signs. Sometimes the signs signify religious and mythological aspects relevant to the culture and the history of man.
At Muharram museum symbols of Muharrem such as candles, lamps, cradles, various flags are displayed. The aim of establishing such a museum is displaying material attractions and symbols used on the month of Muharrem. Thebuilding of the museum is one of the old houses of Tabriz called Sehati’s house. The style of architecture shows that the building dates back to the end of Qajar era. The house covered an area of 409 sq. m in three floors. It has been registered under the number of 2336 in the list of national monuments of the country since 1999.
