ISURU Linux (Sinhalese: ඉසුරු ලිනක්ස්) is an operating system developed by the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka. ISURU Linux is customized for the use in Sri Lankan schools. ISURU Linux is based on Ubuntu Linux (Sinhalese: උබුන්ටු ලිනක්ස්) operating system. Which is referred as "Operating system and Application software collection".

History

In 30 June 2012 ISURU Linux was introduced to Sri Lankan schools by The Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka. It is an effort of the ICT Branch of Ministry of Education, Teachers, as well as the Sri Lankan Open Source Community.

The first release was ISURU Linux 12.04. The second edition was ISURU Linux 14.04. From the experience gain from the previous versions ISURU Linux 16.04 "change" ("For a Difference") was released on 30 April 2016.

Usage

ISURU Linux is used for teaching Sri Lankan GCE O-level and GCE A-level "Information and Communication Technology" subjects.

Help and Technical Support

The Ministry of Education, Sri Lankan has trained a specialized ISURU Linux Technical Support team. The ISURU Linux Technical Support team is willing to solve the day to day practical problems arise when using the ISURU Linux operating system. ISURU Linux Technical Support team will conduct National and Provincial level teacher training programs.

The Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka has set up a Community Forum and a Social Media Networking Group to help teachers to solve the errors with the participation of Sri Lankan Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) community.

In addition to the ISURU Linux Technical Support team, to improve the knowledge of the Sri Lankan school's teachers about the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), "ISURU Linux Training Manual" book was prepared by The Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka. The Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka has printed and distributed "ISURU Linux Training Manual" to all the schools in Sri Lanka.

ISURU Linux Training Manual

The Teacher Training book prepared for ISURU Linux training programs is known as "ISURU Linux Training Manual" (Sinhalese: "ඉසුරු ලිනක්ස් පුහුණු අත්පොත"). The main objective of preparing of this book is providing practical experience on how to use ISURU Linux and Open Source applications in the classroom environment.
