Bharatiya Kisan Sangh
The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) (translation: Indian Farmers' Union) is an Indian farmers' representative organisation affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.[1] It is one of the well-known Sangh Parivar organization.[2] Under the able guidance of Shri Thengdi, Shri Bhau Saheb Bhaskute as the guiding soul, formed for the first time Bhartiya Kisan Sangh in Madhya Pradesh in 1978 and began its activities after getting the organisation duly registered. The first meeting and the registration took place in the Kasera Dharamsala of Hoshangabad District. Next year, Shri Bhaskuteji travelled the entire length and breadth of the Nation and motivated 650 farmer representatives and organised their first conference at Kota (Rajasthan) on 3, 4 and 5 March 1979. In this very conference, an all India organisation of Indian farmers named "Bhartiya Kisan Sangh" was established on 4 March by Shri Thengdi. On this very occasion Shri Thengdi declared emphatically and in clear words that this Organisation would be a non-political body of the farmers, for the farmers and by the farmers.[3] It has units in all states of India, with nearly 20,000,000 members.,[4] As of 2005, the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh is Mr. Prabhakar Kelkar and President is Mr. Aniruddha R. Murkute.[5]
Stated aims
According to the website of the organisation, the stated aims and objectives of the organisation are to "unite and organise" the peasantry for the "betterment of their financial social, cultural, educational, conditions and cottage industrial activity by making available stable avenues of livelihood and survival", "to make available information and other related literature in respect of new innovations, improvements, methodologies" etc. in the field of agriculture and to encourage the farmers to adopt the same", "to emphasis to importance and suitability of age old agriculture technique, methodology and to combine the same with modern inventions so as to have ecological security of fertile soil, adequate water, seeds, cattle, plants and biodiversity", "to collect, experiment, innovate, improve and publicise the centuries old practices and usages in the agriculture field so as to benefit others as well as to protect the same from being patented", etc.[3]
Activities
- On March 2005, the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh urged the Government of India to set up a $20-billion fund for the development of agriculture infrastructure in the nation.[5]
- In 2007, the BKS showed resentment with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat. Dissatisfied with the prevailing cotton prices, it set to lead a farmers' agitation in Saurashtra.[1]
- On 13 September 2013 Bhartiya Kisan Sangh organised a rally at Ramlila Maidan at New Delhi which was attended by about 150,000 farmers across the country.
