Since 1743, when the first Hydrotherapy Centre was built near the Sainte-Odile spring, the vocation of Avène has never changed: The Hydrotherapy Centre is entirely dedicated to dermatology. The therapeutic properties of Avène Thermal Spring Water has been used at the Hydrotherapy Centre to address a variety of dermatological conditions and skin concerns such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema and burns.

The brand is centered on Avène Thermal spring water and its soothing properties. Originating as rain, the water filters through the Cévennes Mountains absorbing minerals and trace elements for until it reaches the mouth of the ancient Sainte-Odile spring. Its composition is thought to make it effective for the care and management of sensitive skin. Over 150 stringent biological, pharmacological and clinical studies on Avène Thermal Spring Water have been conducted by the Company and independent researchers. After 12 years of work, researchers identified one of the reasons why Avène Thermal Spring Water is so effective - it’s called “Aqua Dolomiae".

Avène Thermal Spring Water comes from an extremely deep, pure source that is home to a unique, age-old microflora called "Aqua Dolomiae". The two-part name describes its dual nature: AQUA refers to the thermal water in which it grows and DOLOMIAE to the varied dolomite rock through which the thermal water flows underground in Avène. This process originated as pure rain mixed with sea spray rich in mineral salts, then the water filters through porous, mineral filled rocks and comes into contact with micro organism, Aqua Dolomiae. This unique occurrence does not occur anywhere else in the world except the Cevennes mountains in France.
