Anantapur railway station is located in Anantapur district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and serves Anantapur city. It lies on Guntakal-Bengaluru line.

History

During the period 1861–1871 Madras Railway extended its Chennai-Arakonnam line to Raichur to join the Great Indian Peninsula Railway line, thereby linking Mumbai and Chennai with a 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) wide broad gauge line in 1871.[1]

During 1888 to 1890 Southern Mahratta Railway developed a metre gauge line from Vijayawada to Margao, passing through Guntakal.[2]

The Guntakal-Bangalore line was opened in 1892–93.[3] The metre gauge Guntakal-Mysore Frontier Railway was opened in 1893. It was operated by Southern Mahrata Railway.[4]

Electrification

The 223 km long Nandalur-Guntakal sector was electrified by 2012. As of 2014, electrification work was in progress in the Wadi-Guntakal sector, the Hospet-Guntakal sector and 641 km[5] is now electrified up to Guntakal. All the express trains are running with traction locos from Chennai to Guntakal.

Anatapur is classified as an A–category station in the Guntakal railway division.[6]
