The 2013–14 Iraqi Premier League was the 40th season of the Iraqi Premier League since its establishment in 1974. The season began on 29 October 2013 and ended prematurely on 18 June 2014. Al-Shorta won the league for the second time in a row, finishing one point ahead of Arbil FC. Each team was scheduled to play 30 games in the season, but the Iraq Football Association decided to end the league prematurely (rather than cancelling it) with teams having played either 23, 22 or 21 games, crowning leaders Al-Shorta as champions. The reason for the decision was because of the unrest in the country as well as the fact that Ramadan was approaching and many stadiums did not have floodlights meaning that games could not be played at night.
Promotion and relegation
Teams promoted from 2012-13 Iraq Division 1
Teams relegated to 2013-14 Iraq Division 1
Format
A total of 16 teams contested the league, two fewer than last season. As a result of this, the bottom four teams in the 2012-13 season were relegated but only two were promoted from the Iraq Division 1. These two promoted teams were Naft Maysan and Al-Karkh. This season saw no teams relegated as the league was ended early and four teams from the lower division will be promoted which will result in a 20-team league for the 2014-15 season.
The winner will qualify to the 2015 AFC Champions League Qualifying play-off and the runner-up qualify to the 2015 AFC Cup. The 3rd place this season will qualify for the 2014–15 UAFA Club Cup.
