Weller Hauraki (born 18 February 1985 in Dannevirke, New Zealand) is a professional rugby league player who currently plays for Salford in the Super League. He is a New Zealand Māori representative. Hauraki is a Second Rower
Playing career
Manawatu
Hauraki played for Manawatu in the 2002 North Island Super 6 competition.[2]
Parramatta Eels
Hauraki began his career in the NRL, playing for Australian side Parramatta Eels. He made his debut against New Zealand Warriors during the 2007 season and went on to make 32 appearances over three seasons.
His most memorable game for the Eels came in Round 6 of the 2009 season, when he scored two tries against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, after replacing the injured Australian Test International Nathan Hindmarsh.
Crusaders RL
In 2010, to ease pressure on the Eels salary cap, Hauraki was released and signed a two-year contract with Crusaders RL Super League club.[3] He made his debut for Crusaders against Wigan on Friday 5 February 2010 at the DW Stadium.[4] He went on to make 28 appearances, scoring 10 tries as Crusaders reached the play-offs for the first time.
Leeds
After his very impressive first season in Super League, Hauraki signed a three-year contract with the four-time champion Leeds. He made his debut off the bench against Hull and scored in Leeds' 32-18 win.[5] He played at loose forward for Leeds in the 2011 Challenge Cup final which was lost to Wigan.
Castleford
Weller joined Castleford for the 2013 season. Wellar quickly established himself in what surprisingly became one of super leagues most feared packs, helping them cement their highest Super League finish of 4th. He was also instrumental in a run to the Challenge Cup final, that ended in a 23-10 defeat against rivals Leeds Rhinos.
Representative career
Hauraki was named in the New Zealand training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup but did not make the final squad.[6]
However Hauraki did play for the New Zealand Māori in their 2008 34-26 defeat to the Indigenous Dreamtime Team before the start of World Cup. He had previously represented the side in 2005.[7]
Hauraki again played for the New Zealand Māori in 2010, in the 18-18 draw against England.[8]
