The Wankaner Junction railway station belongs to Western Railway of Ahmedabad Division. It is located in Rajkot district of Gujarat State.
History
The Morvi-Wankaner section was laid as a 2ft6inch road side tram way in the year 1890 by Morvi Railway under the regime of Sir Waghji Thakor. Wadhwan-Rajkot metre gauge section of Morvi State Railway laid in the year 1890.[1] Sir Lakhdhiraji [2] who ruled from 1922 until 1948. Sir Lakhdiraji Thakor acted as a ruler, manager, patron and policeman of the state with great authority. Sir Lakhdiraji, like other contemporary rulers of Saurashtra, built roads and a railway network (of seventy miles), connecting Wadhwan and Morbi and the two small ports of Navlakhi and Vavania, for exporting the state's production of salt and cloth. Rajkot-wadhwan section gauge conversion completed in the year 1905 by Morvi State Railway. Later Morvi-Wankaner section was converted to Metre gauge in 1924 to match rail lines of other state.[3]
Railway reorganization
Morvi State Railway was merged into the Western Railway on 5 November 1951. It was the last Steam engine hauled section in India in the year 2000. It is the historical railway station having steam shed. Before railbuses took over on Wankaner-Morvi, there were two-coach trains hauled by YG or YP steam locos (these were the last steam-hauled trains on those routes).[4] Wankaner-Maliya Miyana section Conversion to Broad gauge was completed in the year 2001.
