"Voices of Authority" is an episode from the third season of the science-fiction television series Babylon 5.
Synopsis
Ivanova and Marcus go in search of the First Ones with Draal's guidance. A new political officer, Julie Musante (Shari Shattuck), is assigned to Babylon 5. Sheridan has to deal with her inquiries while keeping the 'Conspiracy of Light' a secret. Her methods of getting closer to Sheridan include a seduction attempt. Susan uses The Great Machine to examine Sigma 957 and ends up seeing and recording a past transmission from Vice President Clark involving the assassination of the former president. G'Kar confronts Delenn about the War Council and the Rangers.
Arc significance
- Musante arrives at Babylon 5 to serve as the political officer. She seeks to extend and expand the scope of the Nightwatch force, while attempting to impose political oversight over the staff.
- Draal (John Schuck), the Minbari custodian of The Great Machine on Epsilon 3, makes a reappearance to help Ivanova locate the First Ones.
- Contact is made with the First Ones - the Walkers at Sigma 957, attempting to rally them in the war against the Shadows. This particular ship appears in Season One in Mind War.
- Through the use of the Great Machine, Susan Ivanova is able to inadvertently uncover new evidence that President Clark was involved in President Santiago's assassination. This video evidence is made public, in which the voice of Mr Morden is heard talking to Vice President Morgan Clark, implicating them both in the assassination conspiracy.
- In response to Ivanova finding the evidence that President Santiago's assassination was arranged by Clark, Draal states that "A normal human mind should not have been able to do that", confirming that she does have some latent telepathic ability.
Production details
- In the episode notes on the Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5, JMS says that the best translation of the word "ZOG" (which the Walkers of Sigma-957 say to Ivanova when she first mentions the Vorlons) is basically "The Vorlons can kiss my ***".
