Vale of Leven District General Hospital or simply the Vale of Leven Hospital is a District General Hospital in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, and is part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Current services

The Vale of Leven Hospital serves a population of approximately 78,000 within the constituency of Dumbartonshire and is only about 30 minutes from Glasgow. It has 92 inpatient beds. The hospital provides a range of services including inpatient beds, general medicine, women’s health, orthopaedics; maternity services and a Minor Injuries Unit.

The 'Vision for the Vale', NHSGGC's proposals for the future development of the Vale of Leven Hospital were approved by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing on 16 July 2009.

The hospital has approximately 47 births per year and has full accreditation as baby friendly, since 2006.[1] This is down from 900 births per year in 2002.[2]

History

The hospital was built just after the Second World War[3] and was previously NHS Argyll & Clyde.

Performance

An Inquiry was set up by Scottish Ministers to investigate the occurrence of C. difficile infection at the hospital from 1 January 2007 onwards. The Inquiry published its final report on 24 November 2014.[4][5] The findings of the inquiry were considered by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties in Scotland, when they produced a report in July 2015, entitled “Learning from serious failings in care”.[6][7]
