The woodland runs into Birdsedge and contains more than 75 Hairy Northern Wood Ant (Formica lugubris) nests.

Culture

The annual Cumberworth Carnival is usually held within the grounds of the first school. The carnival includes a parade of floats, one of which carries the carnival king and queen for the year, who are usually pupils of the first school. Marquees host stalls selling cakes, plants and books, alongside tombolas and games. For the 2007 carnival the evening event included a live band for the second year running and a barbecue.
