Timber Creek High School is a public high school located in Orlando, Florida, within the Orange County Public Schools system. The Timber Creek mascot is a wolf and the principal is Dr. Kelly Paduano.

History

Timber Creek High school was built in 2000 as a relief school for nearby University High School. Mr. John Wright was the founding Principal and remained at Timber Creek until 2012 when he became the Executive Area Director for the East Learning Community. Currently the principal is Dr. Kelly Paduano.

Athletics

Timber Creek has won state championships in bowling (2006, boys and girls), volleyball (2008 FHSAA),[2] and cheerleading (2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013).[3]

Other programs offered include Athletic Training, Baseball, Basketball, Beach volleyball, Bowling, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Flag Football, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track and field, Volleyball, Water polo, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.

Programming Team

The Programming Team at Timber Creek High School competes in contests modeled after the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. They attend contests at Stetson University, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, and Florida International University. In addition, they are members of the Florida High School Programming Series, USA Computing Olympiad, and the American Computer Science League. They also attend other online contests hosted by CodeForces, TopCoder, and CodeChef.[4]

Robotics Team

The Timber Creek High School Robotics Team is composed of Project Lead The Way engineering students. They have competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST Tech Challenge, and the VEX Robotics Competition throughout their existence as a Robotics Team. They have won many awards and were featured this year on Channel 6 Local News. Their greatest accomplishments include qualifying to compete at the VEX Robotics World Championship the last two consecutive years as well as finishing the 2014-2015 VEX Robotics season with the Florida State Champion title.

At the 2015 World Championship held in Louisville, Kentucky the two robots competing (5956A & 5956B) ranked very high in the skills challenges against the best teams in the World. In the programming skills challenge, team B placed 31st overall out of the 450 teams competing. When compared to the US teams, they placed 19th in the nation out of 324 teams, and 1st in Florida. In the robot skills challenge, team A placed 44th in the world, and compared to US teams, placed 30th in the nation, and 1st in Florida.

In addition to winning the 2015 Florida State Championship and competing in the World Championship, the team’s awards are listed below.[7]

Academics

Timber Creek, like most high schools, offers many Advanced Placement (AP) classes including:

The APC (AP Choice) program is an advanced placement program for freshmen and sophomores. The APC program puts its students in classes with other APC students, and moves these classes at a faster pace then normal honors classes. It is intended to prepare the students for the AP courses that they will take in the future by increasing rigor and moving at the faster pace than normal honors classes. The APC program also requires the enrollment in AP Human Geography freshmen year to give the students a taste of AP classes. At graduation, if the students that were in the APC program have taken at least 6 AP classes during their high school years, they receive a special sticker on their diploma that recognizes them as an AP scholar.[8]

Performing arts

Theatre Program

Under the direction of Justin Horn, the Timber Creek Thespians of Troope 6303 (formerly Timber Creek Character Company) produces four main stage shows each year. The 2011-2012 season included: the commedia dell'arte piece A Servant of Two Masters; Oedipus Rex, which received Best in Show for the District V Thespians and straight superiors at the Florida State Thespians; the student-directed musical A Chorus Line, and the musical satire Urinetown, The Musical (April 19–21).

The 2010 - 2011 season included: the one-act competition piece Doubt, a Parable (November 4–7, 2010) which ranked second our of twenty-four schools in the District V Thespians One-Act competition; the student-directed musical The Twenty-Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (December 9–12, 2010); the student-directed advanced drama play The Laramie Project (February 3–6, 2011); and the spring musical Chicago (April 21–24, 2011).

The 2009 - 2010 season included Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses, which ranked third out of twenty-four schools in the District V Thespians One-Act competition, and the Cole Porter classic Anything Goes. The Company has produced large scale shows such as Dracula, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, Once Upon a Mattress, Crazy For You, Arsenic and Old Lace, Miracle on 34th Street, Footloose and Cats. The Timber Creek Thespians also hosts an annual Play in a Day Festival. They are also actively involved with the Cappies program, which is a student theatre critic program. They have received the award for the Best Cappies Critics Team award four years in a row.

Band Program

The Timber Creek Regiment led the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Parade in honor of Michael Phelps on August 29, 2008, played in front of the Lincoln Memorial in March 2010, and received straight "Superior" Marching MPA marks every year since the school opened for the 2001-2002 school year.

On November 15, 2003, in only their third year of existence (and at their first appearance at the Florida Marching Band Coalition (FMBC) Championships), the Timber Creek Regiment was crowned FMBC Overall Grand Champion at the FMBC State Finals, the first band other than Cypress Creek High School (Orlando FL) recognized as "State Champions".[9]

The Regiment also had an undefeated 2009 season with their show Within. The Regiment has won numerous awards, such as best brass, best woodwinds, best colorguard, best effect, etc. On November 20, 2010, the Timber Creek Regiment's performance of X: The Journey garnered them recognition as Class 5A Champions at the 2010 FMBC Championships, held at Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg FL (as of the 2005 marching season, FMBC no longer designates a "Grand Champion" at state finals).[10]

The percussion program of the Timber Creek bands began competing as an indoor scholastic marching percussion ensemble in 2006, as a member of the Florida Federation of Color Guard Circuits (FFCC).

Debate program

The Debate Team won State Championship in 2009 in the event of Public Forum Debate. In 2014 they closed out The Liberty Bell Classic hosted by The University of Pennsylvania in the event of Public Forum Debate and placed first in the team sweepstakes category. In Lincoln-Douglas Debate they championed Blue Key, The University of Florida's debate tournament.
