The Free Derby
The Free is a cultural magazine distributed free of charge in and around Derby, UK. It was first published in September 2012. The magazine motto is Feathers Ruffled Every Edition. Issue 2 was published in December 2012. It is written produced and edited by husband and wife team Elaine and Pip Southall from their home in Derby. Topics covered range through local history, pubs, music, political and satirical subjects. It encourages new writing and independent local enterprises and is funded by advertising.
As of August 2014 eleven editions have been published to critical acclaim, including one featuring an interview with Terry Christian once of Radio Derby. Favoured themes are the destruction of the historic fabric of Derby in the 1960s and 1970s, with many rare photographs of bygone landmarks such as Cockpit Hill, the old Assembly Rooms and Market Place, the Midland Drapery and St Alkmund's Churchyard.
The Free also sees itself as something of a local Private Eye with satire never far from the forefront in a healthy smattering of council-baiting.
