Tan Yan Zhang (born January 30, 1998) is a Singaporean Pianist, Composer and Conductor. He currently serves as Associate Conductor and Resident Composer of the Singapore Community Saxophone Ensemble.[1]

Early life

Tan was first introduced to the piano at the age of 4, and later enrolled in the Yamaha Junior Music Course. He received his music training in piano performance at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts School of Young Talents for four years [2] before leaving the school to study privately with American Pianist Sylvia Ng and Bosendorfer Artist Josephine Koh. At the age of 12, he studied Music Composition, Conducting, and Harmony & Counterpoint with Composer and Conductor Tan Chan Boon, and soon began composing and arranging works for solo performers, ensembles, concert bands and orchestras.

Tan's compositions and arrangements have been performed extensively across Singapore by many ensembles such as the Singapore Community Saxophone Ensemble,[3] Ensembles of the Flute & Music Academy (Singapore),[4] the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band and Saxophone Quartet,[5] the Crescent Girls' School Symphonic Band, the Fairfield Symphonic Band, the Philharmonic Winds,[6] the Mus’Art Wind Orchestra,[7] the Singapore Wind Symphony,[8] the Singapore Armed Forces Bands, and many more, at venues such as the Esplanade Concert Hall and Yamaha Recital Hall (Singapore). His music has also been featured regularly at the People's Association Community Music Time, the "Esplanade Presents" and "Limelight Concert" Programme, as well as the Singapore Press Holdings Gift of Music Series.[9][10][11][12]

His current teacher-mentor is award-winning composer, Dr Kelly Tang, who was conferred the Cultural Medallion in 2011.

Personal life

Tan resides in Singapore and is currently an International Baccalaureate student at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). He teaches Piano and Music Theory privately.
