Tan Weiwei (simplified Chinese: 谭维维; traditional Chinese: 譚維維; pinyin: Tán Wéiwéi or Sitar Tan; born October 8, 1982 in Sichuan) is a Chinese singer.
She was the runner-up of the third season (2006) of Super Girl (Chinese: 超级女声), a singing contest in China. In 2015, she participated I Am a Singer (season 3),[1] where it was revealed that she is a vegan.
Biography
Tan Weiwei was born in Fushun County, Zigong, Sichuan province, on October 8, 1981. She spent her childhood in Zigong with her parents. As a teenager, she became interested in pop music. In 1997, she won first places in the Students Art Festivals in both her primary and secondary schools. At the end of 1998, she began to perform in bars. When she was 19, she entered the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, where many the biggest names of the mainland Chinese Mandopop singer had been trained. Although her marks were not very high, she managed to improve her vocal technique thanks to Lanka Dolma,[2] a Chinese vocal trainer of Tibetan ethnicity, who discovered the hidden talent of the young singer. Thanks to Lanka Dolma,[2] she learned many traditional singing techniques which nowadays, Tan uses in her recordings. And at the same year, she was honored as Top Ten singers of Sichuan province.
Music career
In 2000, she won the first place in Young Singer Competition.[3]
In 2001, she took part in International Music Festival in Tokyo.
In 2002, her personal vocal concert held in Chengdu, Sichuan.
In 2004, she released her first studio album "The heart of the highland[4]". Under StarWin Records, that album featured many versions of ethnic traditional songs. She won World Music Award of France. Tan participated in a National Singing Competition and also made her first steps in the filming industry.
In 2005, she took part in New Year concert of China in the Musikverein. She took part in the "Heartbeat"[5] television series.
In 2006, Tan Weiwei took part in the third season of the Super Girl contest after many casting performances in Chengdu. She was notable for her strong voice and for her charisma, thanks to those, she won the second place in the contest. After her successful participation, she was signed to EE-Media, a record label where the most of the Super Girl contestants released their works. She published her personal single If I Haven’t Fell Into Love[6] released after the competition.
In 2007, she recorded, her second album "Ear of the world[7]", which is usually considered as her real debut album. This album was a success and enabled her to pursue her musical career.On the 27th April, 2008, her first personal concert was held in Beijing. On the 25th September,2008, her personal concert was held in Lasa.
In 2009, Tan released her third album "Legend[8]" under FMG Music. With this album, Tan started winning her first awards. She was priced with the Taiwan Golden Horse for the song "Legend[8]" in the category of best original song. That was a milestone in her career because it was the first time that a Mainland Chinese singer won that award. Since then, she has been a recognized singer both in Taiwan and in the Mainland.
In 2010, the singer returned to EE-Media, her former record label and released her fourth album "Tan Moumou".[9] After the release of this album she was awarded with the Chinese Music Media Awards,[10] in the category of best female mandopop singer. On 2 September, Tan was hired by Sichuan Conservatory of Music as associate professor.
In 2011, her fifth album, entitled "3",[11] was published and also a success.
In 2013, Tan Weiwei, released her sixth album with the title of "Tortoise called Achilles[12]" in which she started combining her mainstream mandopop with ethnic elements, with a much more alternative style, experimenting with new styles such as Rock and Electronic Music.
In 2015, she took part in the program "I Am A Singer",[1] and signed a contract with the Beijing based label TH Entertainment, a growing record company, where nowadays, singers such as Yang Kun and Jin Sha, work.
