The Church of St. Roch is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, located at 602 Port Richmond Avenue, Staten Island, New York City. It was established in 1922. It is sometimes confused with St. Roch's Church in the Bronx, established in 1899.[1]
History
The parish of St. Roch began as a mission church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to serve the Italian community of Port Richmond. The pastor of the Polish church of St. Adalbert spoke Italian and used to assist mothers at St. Roch's who did not speak English.[2]
The church was dedicated in 1922 by Patrick Cardinal Hayes; Father Catello Terrone was appointed pastor. Originally services were conducted in both English and Italian.[2] In 1960 Fr. Pasquale Cannizzaro, from Calabria, oversaw the building of the parish elementary school and the convent which were subsequently dedicated by Francis Cardinal Spellman. Before construction of the school building, students took classes in makeshift classrooms in the parish hall.[3]
The parish school was among 27 closed by Archbishop Dolan in the Archdiocese of New York on 11 January 2011.[4][5]
In 2014 it was announced that the Parish of St. Roch would merge with St. Adalbert's.
