St. Alphonsus Rodriguez School (ESAR) (Escola Santo Afonso Rodriguez) was opened by the Jesuits in Teresina, Brazil, in 1963. It covers elementary through high school and includes technical courses.

History

St. Alphonsus Rodriguez is located in the Socopo neighborhood on the east side of Teresina, Brazil. The Socopo neighborhood consists of many underemployed people earning a minimum wage in the informal sector. Basic services are inadequate, in sanitation, education, health, and leisure, which inhibits the human development of the population.

School construction began in 1963 with the arrival of the Jesuits and it opened in 1965 with 105 students. Since this was a rural area, ESAR began as an agricultural school but with urbanization it grew into an elementary school and high school, also offering courses in Human Resources and Information Technology, to a combined 700 students.[2]

ESAR offers courses in Computer Technician and Technician Human Relations School for high school students. Coursework in computer technology requires 320 hours of practical experience through an internship. Among the projects undertaken was developing a system for the Diocesan College and for Pedro Arrupe Solcial Center.[3]

Varia

Among its outreach works, the parents and students held a bazaar to benefit education in Haiti.[4]

Attention has been drawn to the school by the public awards received by its teachers[5] and by the success of its boys' volleyball team at the state public school games.[6]
