Scott Metzger (born October 12, 1977) is an American guitarist. His work touches on many styles including psychedelic rock, soul, country, jazz, and surf rock. His collaborations with other artists include Phil Lesh, Joe Russo (musician), John Mayer, Stanton Moore, Shooter Jennings, Trixie Whitley, Nicole Atkins, Anders Osborne, and LaLa Brooks of The Crystals. Metzger is currently active in Joe Russo's Almost Dead and WOLF!
Biography
Metzger was born in Trenton, New Jersey and began playing guitar in his teens. He was raised in Lambertville, New Jersey which is directly across the Delaware river from New Hope, Pennsylvania which is where Metzger first met Dean and Gene Ween. In the late nineties he was overheard playing in a coffee shop in Princeton, New Jersey by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and lyricist Tom Marshall (poet) and was invited to join Marshall's newly formed Amfibian on lead guitar, which toured extensively and gave Metzger his first nationwide exposure. in 2001 he moved to New York City and began playing around the city, working his way into the musician communities at The Knitting Factory, CBGB, and Wetlands Preserve. He spent much of the early 2000s touring nationally with the band RANA. Throughout this period he was invited to perform with many acts as a special guest including Gov't Mule [1]
In late 2005 Metzger briefly left the east coast to join the west coast band Particle (band). While this collaboration lasted less than a year he does appear on the bands DVD 'Transformations' which also featureds Robby Krieger of the The Doors, and Joe Satriani.[2]
Since returning to NYC in 2007 Scott has been involved in numerous tours and projects including-
2008 - played lead guitar in the Gene Ween Band along with Joe Russo (musician) and Dave Dreiwitz [3]
2008 - was musical director of HeadCount's 'Get out The Vote' concert which featured ?uestlove, Joss Stone, and others [4]
2012 - Invited to be a member of the house band for the annual the complete last waltz [5]
2013 - toured extensively throughout Europe, Japan, and Australia with Belgian singer Trixie Whitley in support of her album 'Fourth Corner'
2013 - is a founding member of Joe Russo's Almost Dead
2014/15 - regularly performs as a special guest as a part of Phil and Friends [6]
2014/15/16 - has toured extensively nationwide with JRAD
2014/2015 - toured extensively with Anders Osborne
2015 - releases first recording by project WOLF! on royal potato records which features drummer Taylor Floreth and bassist Jon Shaw [7]
2015 - was featured in December issue of Vintage Guitar (magazine) [8]
