Samito is a Mozambican-Canadian singer-songwriter, music producer and musician based in Montreal whose music blends acoustica and electronica with African and world music sounds to create a distinct music style in part inspired by his upbringing in Maputo, Mozambique. He plays guitar and keyboards. On May 19, 2015, Radio Canada announced Samito as the 2015-2016 Revelation for the World Music category.[1] Samito, his eponymous debut album, was released on May 27, 2016. Samito sings in Portuguese, English, French and Tswa.
Career
He is the son of an Anglican priest and a mother of five. His mother enrolled him at Escola Nacional de Música far from thinking he would ever choose music for a career. After several years working as a musician in Maputo and Cape Town, Samito moved to Montreal to pursue studies and a career in music. Here he had the opportunity to work with Nom de Plume, Renji Condoré, Kweku, The New Groove Orchestra, Emma & The Noise, among others.
Samito produced six tracks for the Juno nominated 2014 album Le Dernier Empereur Bantou [2] by fellow Montrealer Pierre Kwenders. In 2015, along with artist Alexandre Arthur Bilodeau (aka Nom de Plume), he co-produced Tae Kwon Fu, a seven—song record of one—take workout sessions held in late 2013 by Allfire and Nom de Plume.[3]
On May 27, 2016, he released his debut album, the self-titled Samito with his hit "Tiku la hina" from the album released as a single with an accompanying music video that has been broadcast on Canadian music channels Much and MusiquePlus.
