Saint Paul Tsaramasoandro Philosohate has since 1957 served Jesuit seminarians during their years of philosophical studies, and since 1999 has been open to a larger student population. It is run by the Society of Jesus and currently situated adjacent to the College of Saint Michael, Amparibe campus in Antananarivo, Madagascar.[1]
History
Saint Paul Tsaramasoandro traces its name to the church in an isolated village on the island.[2] While the Jesuit school of philosophy in Madagascar goes back to 1957, Jesuits decided in 1972 to collaborate as far as possible with the Bishops Conference of Madagascar in the educational field, which began in 1973 with approval from the Bishop's Conference for Education. Then in 1995 the Bishops Conference promoted the foundation of three faculties in the Catholic university: Theology, Philosophy, and Social Sciences. This caused the programme of philosophy to be reduced to two years, which was insufficient for the requirements of priestly training. In 1997 the new philosophate was erected (pictured here[3]) and in 1999 the religious Major Superiors of Madagascar asked the Jesuit superior to open it to their members.[4] Saint Paul Tsaramasoandro is one of five priestly training houses for Jesuits in the Africa-Madagascar region.[5]
The Saint Paul Tsaramasoandro scholastic choral group is prominent for its recordings.[6][7][8]
