Rebecca D. Costa is an American sociobiologist,[1] author,[2] and radio host[3][4] She is best known for her controversial book, The Watchman's Rattle, which offers an evolutionary explanation for modern problems such as government gridlock, terrorism, obesity, the decline in education, violence, etc. National Public Radio's EarthSky said, "Rebecca Costa is a sociobiologist who spots and explains emerging trends in relationship to human evolution, global markets, and new technologies."[5] Costa is an authority on biological imperatives which frequently drive economic, political and social agendas. She has been featured in The New York Times,[6] USA Today,[7] Washington Post,[8] Larry King Live,[9] etc.

Early life

Costa was born in San Mateo, California, in 1955. Her father, an Air Force-trained flight engineer, moved the family to Tokyo, Japan, shortly after her birth. Costa attended Tachikawa Elementary School and Narimasu High School. She is fluent in Japanese. Owing to her father's work for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Costa moved to Vientiane, Laos, during the Vietnam War where she and her family lived undercover for two years.

Prior to the Pathet Lao (communist) invasion of Vientiane, Costa's family was evacuated to California where Costa graduated from Saratoga High School. She received her Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from the University of California.

Costa's first full-time employment was for CAD+CAM start-up Calma, a subsidiary of United Telecom. Calma was purchased by General Electric Company when Costa was Director of Marketing. Subsequently, Costa worked in Executive Management for Omex and Tera Corporations before starting her own company in Silicon Valley, Dazai Advertising, which was sold to J. Walter Thompson in 1999.

The Watchman's Rattle

On October 12, 2010, Vanguard Press,[10] a division of Perseus Books Group, Inc., published Costa's first book: The Watchman's Rattle.[11]

Acclaimed Harvard University naturalist, Edward O. Wilson, contributed the foreword to the book.[12] The Watchman's Rattle received endorsements from Richard Branson,[13] Dr. James Watson,[14] Temple Grandin,[15] Donald Trump,[16] politicians Bill Bradley,[14] Bill Richardson[14] and others. The book earned a "Highly Recommend" by the New York Journal of Books,[17] and The New York Times speculated whether Costa would be "Oprah's Next Star."[6]

Media Partner of ABC Television Group, GreenRightNow.com recognized the book as one of the best "green" books of 2010.[18] Bart Alexander, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer for Molson Coors, said that The Watchman's Rattle "is a wakeup call book about what political, economic, and social challenges the world may be facing."[19] Inc. Magazine said The Watchman's Rattle is "a fascinating study on how the brain works and how, in the face of complex challenges, our society can survive despite our intelligence being outpaced by our problems."[20] The book was distributed in 20 countries. In November 2012, the paperback edition of The Watchman's Rattle was released by Perseus Books Group, Inc.[21]

Costa is presently represented by the Scott Meredith Literary Agency in New York City.[22]

The Costa Report

The success of The Watchman's Rattle led to a syndicated weekly radio news program called The Costa Report. The program is characterized by its nonpartisan nature. Each week Costa interviews newsmakers ranging from Ron Paul,[23] Pat Buchanan,[24] Vint Cerf,[25] and Alan Dershowitz[26] to Michael Dukakis,[27] John R. Bolton[28] and Noam Chomsky,[29] in search of solutions to global challenges. The program is in its fifth season and airs in Chicago,[30] Seattle,[31] Tucson,[32] San Jose, Miami and other metro areas throughout the United States.[33]

The Costa Report is produced each Thursday at 2PM Pacific Time by flagship station KSCO NewsTalk Radio AM 1080 in Santa Cruz, CA.

The Costa Report is syndicated by The Genesis Communication Network (GCN) [34][35] and VoiceAmerica.[36]

Television

In 2011, Costa agreed to host an internet television program on the emPOWERmetv network.[37] The program was titled Countermeasures, with host Rebecca Costa, and loosely based on The Costa Report radio show. Following an 8- episode television pilot, Costa was offered a contract for a full season, but declined stating "The time needed to research, write, and oversee a weekly television program is more than my schedule can accommodate."

Public speaking

Immediately following the publication of The Watchman's Rattle, Costa joined the Leigh Bureau.[38] She made 67 public appearances during her first year with the lecture agency, after which she signed with the American Program Bureau, which continues to represent her.[39]

Personal life

Rebecca Costa lives on the coast of California. She has two children by marriage. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the Boys and Girls Club, American Red Cross, and Habitat for Humanity.
