ReGenesis are an English progressive rock tribute band of Genesis. ReGenesis perform mostly material from Genesis' Peter Gabriel era. Formed in 1994, the band have been through several lineup changes, and the latest incarnation comprises founding members Nigel Appleton (drums) and Doug Melbourne (keyboards), along with Tony Patterson (vocals, flute), Tom Janssen (lead guitar) and Nick Loebner (bass and 12-string guitars).
History
ReGenesis was founded in 1994 by drummer Nigel Appleton, bassist Andy Hyam, and keyboardist Doug Melbourne, along with guitarist Steve Marsh and vocalist Glyn Protheroe.
The band toured regularly and established a solid fan base throughout the UK - especially in London, where they have played shows at the London Astoria, The Shepherds Bush Empire and the O2 Academy in Islington. They have also toured in Belgium and Holland. Tours have generally centred on those albums released when Peter Gabriel was in the band.
ReGenesis appeared in Mojo magazines 'Top Ten Tribute Bands' and also featured briefly in Channel 4s 'Top 10 Progressive Rock Bands' in the section devoted to Genesis.
The band's first lineup change came in late 1998 when Glyn Protheroe departed the band to be replaced by Tony Patterson.[1] The band's lineup then remained stable until the "Lamb For Supper" tour of 2001 when the lineup was augmented by second drummer Jamie Fisher, who departed following the conclusion of that tour. Prior to this tour, at the G2 convention ReGenesis performed the entire The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album. The show featured all new props, costumes as well as projected images and movie footage created specially for the show.
The next year was one of transition for ReGenesis, as first Andy Gray joined the band to replace the departing Steve Marsh, and subsequently Doug Melbourne left the band to focus on family life and was replaced by Piers de Lavison.[2]
In 2005, the band recreated the classic Phil Collins era live album Seconds Out, providing an opportunity for former member Jamie Fisher to briefly rejoin as second drummer.
Members of ReGenesis have forged links with Steve Hackett and his brother John Hackett. Both have attended various shows, and Tony Patterson appears on John's 2005 album "Checking Out Of London". Tony, Andy Hyam and Andy Gray all joined John on stage for his set at the 2006 Genesis Convention along with brother Steve.
For their encore at the Genesis convention of 2006 ReGenesis were joined by Trespass-era Genesis drummer John Mayhew for a rendition of The Knife. This would be Mayhew's last onstage appearance, as he died from a heart-related condition in 2009. Original member Anthony Phillips also attended the show and was reunited with John Mayhew for the first time in over 30 years.
The band dissolved in 2006 with the departure of Hyam, Patterson, and de Lavison, but were reformed in 2009 when Appleton and Gray were able to bring Melbourne and Patterson back into the fold, with new member Shaun Hunt joining on bass. With this line-up they performed well received tours based around the 40th anniversary of Genesis albums 'Trespass' (2010) and 'Foxtrot' (2012) and 'Selling England By the Pound'.
The band performed an acclaimed show to a packed Shepherds Bush Empire on 28 November 2009 from which a live album 'Live at the Empire' was produced. The album featured sleeve notes from Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett who had attended the show.
Their 2012 UK tour 'Foxtrot at 40' was popular and highly acclaimed by critics:
"ReGenesis are not only as good as the genuine 1970s article, I suspect that they may very well often be better, especially on the most intricate aspects of the original band's catalogue. If you're a fan of the Peter Gabriel-era Genesis from the first time around, or a more recent convert to their classic work, there's no better way to see it brought to life in the 21st century. The 'Foxtrot At 40' tour culminated at a packed 02 Academy in Islington, where ReGenesis received the acclaim that their outstanding musicianship deserves." - Paul Sexton, journalist and broadcaster with the Sunday Times, Billboard magazine, BBC Radio 2 and others
After another break, ReGenesis have reformed with new members Tom Janssen and Nick Loebner and are currently working on their most ambitious project to date - an all-new production of 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' featuring new costumes and projections developed by some of the UK's most exciting young artists.
