Ram Kamal Mukherjee (Bengali: রাম কমল মুখার্জী) (born 1976) is a noted Bollywood Film Journalist, Film Critic, former Editor-In-Chief and Bollywood's Youngest Biographer. He is best known for his coffee-table book on actress Hema Malini, Hema Malini Diva Unveiled (2005), the first biographical work about her. He has been a journalist for Screen (now Hotstar), The Asian Age, Stardust and the Mumbai Mirror,[1] and worked as Vice-President of Pritish Nandy Communications. After working in Pritish Nandy Communications for almost four years,[2][3][4] he joined India’s leading film magazine Stardust (magazine) as the Editor In Chief.[5][6] After working with Stardust, now he is writing his first fiction for Leadstart Publishing. He is also writing a book on Bollywood Fitness for Penguin Publishing. He is a guest columnist with www.bollywoodjournalist.com [7] and Guest Lecturer at Harkisan Mehta Institute of Media, Research and Analysis (HMIMRA) for Post Graduate studies on Media and Content Development.[8]

Biography

Ram Kamal Mukherjee born in North Kolkata (Calcutta),[9][9] He developed an interest in actress Hema Malini after watching her films. He says, "soon, that liking grew into a sort of obsession and I became a self proclaimed fan of Hema Malini."[9] When his father Jaydeb Mukherjee realized that he had an interest in writing, he encouraged Ram to write a 'letter to the editor' on his favourite topic (Hema Malini) to Screen (now Hotstar) under the editorship of Udaya Tara Nayar. Poorly written, his father scrapped it and showed him how to write an article.[9] The letter, and a subsequent one, was published in the newspaper and led to the start of a career as a freelance journalist in 1995. Mukherjee graduated in Media and Film Studies at the University of Calcutta. After the period working for Screen, he was appointed as the sub editor for The Asian Age in Kolkata in 2001.[10] He was appointed as the official journalist for Kolkata Film Festival. In 2003, he moved to Mumbai, where he became a Senior Correspondent at Stardust magazine.[10]

Ram Kamal Mukherjee is best known for his coffee-table book on actress Hema Malini, Hema Malini Diva Unveiled (2005),[11][12][13][14] becoming the youngest Bollywood biographer in India at the age of 27.[10][15] The book, the first biographical insight into the life of Malini, is a collector's edition and includes posters of Malini's films since 1970 and more than 500 rare photographs, including unpublished photographs of Hema's childhood, and a letter written by Hema Malini to her daughter Esha in 1983.[16][17] Mukherjee spent a great deal of time researching the book, interviewing almost 30 important people involved in Malini's life.[9] The forward to the book is written by Amitabh Bachchan, her co-star in Baghbaan. Mukherjee had met and interviewed Malini previously as reporter for Stardust and was asked by Nari Hira to write a book about her. Malini approved of the book, saying, "As an actress I have received lots of awards and recognition throughout my acting career. But what makes this moment significant is the fact that Mr. Mukherjee has attempted to recreate me through this book and has given a new meaning to my life and my career. He has made considerable effort in writing this beautiful coffee table book. However, there is more to me. My political career has just begun and I may some day write an autobiography. Although the book garnered Mukherjee the Best Author Award and the Best Journalist Award in Kolkata,[10] the book divided opinion.

Ram Kamal Mukherjee later joined the tabloid Mumbai Mirror as an Assistant Editor. His column "Ram Katha" he established him as a noted journalist and film critic.[10] He worked as the Vice-President of Pritish Nandy Communications, an entertainment, news and media content corporation, and a maker of Indian movies, based in Mumbai. He has also contributed as a columnist to Mid-Day and several other publications.

During this time, the ex editor of Illustrated Weekly and noted film producer Pritish Nandy signed Ram Kamal as the Vice President for Pritish Nandy Communications. PNC is known for making niche cinema and of 12 films produced by PNC, almost all films were screened at various international festivals. He brings with him six years of experience in journalism.

He worked with Rangita Pritish Nandy in PNC on various projects, he was involved in script doctoring, casting lead actors, media and marketing analysis. During this time, he freelanced for publications like Mid Day Ananda Bazar Patrika, Anandalok (ABP Group) and TV18 group. In Midday he contributed for HitList and Sunday Midday under the editorship of Sarita Tanwar and Alpana Lath respectively.

As the editor he worked as a team leader and conducted two successful awards. He incorporated freshness in the magazine with snappy content, gossips, photo features. He edited 12 regular editions, 12 advertorial supplements and 4 special editions annually. He worked on various other aspects like redesigning the magazine and making it more appealing to younger generation.

Currently he is working on his untitled fiction for Leadstart Publishing. He is also mentoring students at Harkishan Mehta Institute of Media, Research and Analysis (HMIMRA) as Guest Faculty for Post Graduate students in Films and Media.

Personal Information

Ram Kamal Mukherjee completed his graduation with History from University of Calcutta. He completed his schooling from St Joseph's College in Calcutta, and later completed his senior schooling from Khalsa Model School. After gradutaion he completed a diploma course in communication from the British Council, later joined Media Studies Film and Television course in University of Calcutta.[19] He scored the highest in the University and enrolled himself for Masters in Journalism.

Before joining The Asian Age, he contributed for Bengali newspapers like Aaj Kaal, Pratohik Sambad and Sambad Ekhon.

Born in North Calcutta, his grand father Dr Kiron Chandra Mukherjee has been India's most renowned surgeon. His father Jaydeb Mukherjee was a successful Legal Advisor to Government of India. He had written few books related to Indian Penal Code. His mother Roma Mukherjee had always inspired him to chase his dream. His mother is a trained singer under the tutelage of Dwijen Mukherjee. His elder brother Krishna Kamal is a self employed businessman.

Ram Kamal married Sarbani Mukherjee in 2007. Sarbani is daughter of Sunith Majumder & Krishna Majumder. Her father Sunith published his first book on poems "Mrityu Kokonode" in Bengali in 1968. His poems were published in Desh & Saptahik Basumati. Noted poet Kabirul Islam reviewed his book stating that it was one of the most contemporary & yet abstract form of literature. He also published Ghaliber Ghazal during the birth centenary of Mirza Ghalib. Sunith also published short stories in Chitrajagat & little magazines. Sarbani's mother Krishna is a trained classical singer. Sarbani completed graduation in Journalism from University of Calcutta. She also worked with various Bengali publications in Kolkata as a freelancer. Currently, she is running her partnership business on media and events. Her company Karmic Media worked with leading film production houses like White Feather Films, Pritish Nandy Communications, Mukta Arts, Venkatesh Films and many individual personalities from Bollywood.

His son's name is Rian Mukherjee.

Anchoring Shows

Ram Kamal directed and anchored 26 episode show for Asian Television Network in Kolkata. Talk Bangla was the first television chat show to showcase 13 Bollywood celebrities in a regional channel. Ram Kamal's free spirited interactive attitude made the show really popular. Celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Himesh Reshammiya, Irfan Khan, Madhur Bandharkar, Shreya Ghoshal and many other celebrities.

After the success of this chat show, he also anchored Chokhey Aamar Trishna. This was directed by Amit Ganguly, and produced by Asian Television Network. This was India's first show on Sex Education.
