Paul Edward Hayes (born 20 September 1983) is an English professional footballer who plays for Wycombe Wanderers as a centre forward. Hayes has made more than 400 appearances for several clubs in all three divisions of the Football League.

Career

Early life and Norwich City

Born in Dagenham, Essex, Hayes grew up in East London and went to Barclay Junior School in Leyton, where he captained the school football team from the age of 7. He later attended Norlington School for Boys with Lee Mills (captain) and The Bromfords School in Wickford, Essex. Hayes started his footballing career as a schoolboy with Norwich City, whom he joined as a 13-year-old. Hayes' first involvement with the first team came in pre-season prior to Norwich's 2001/02 Division 1 campaign, in which he scored in friendlies against Wroxham, Colchester United and Premier League giants Arsenal.[2] He was handed the number 30 shirt and was an unused substitute for the final two games of the regular season. He failed to feature during Norwich's unsuccessful playoff campaign.[2] Hayes failed to feature at all during the early part of the 2002/03 season and became frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities, with strikers Iwan Roberts, Paul McVeigh, David Nielsen, Alex Notman, Zema Abbey and Ian Henderson ahead of him in the pecking order. He spent periods on trial at Division 3 sides Torquay United and Scunthorpe United and had his Norwich academy contract cancelled on 3 December 2002.[2]

Scunthorpe United

Hayes signed a youth contract with Division 3 side Scunthorpe United in December 2002. He scored his first goal for the club on his second appearance, bagging Scunthorpe's fourth goal in a 4–1 win over Southend United on 25 January 2003. On 19 March 2003, Hayes signed a professional contract with Scunthorpe.[2] He scored eight goals in 20 games during the 2002/03 season, though the campaign ended with a heartbreaking playoff semi-final defeat to Lincoln City. Hayes became a regular starter the following season, making 45 appearances and scoring seven goals as Scunthorpe narrowly avoided relegation to the Conference. Hayes scored 19 goals during the 2004/05 season to help Scunthorpe gain automatic promotion to League One. Hayes was in red hot form during October and November 2004, scoring 10 goals in 10 games. A highlight of his season was scoring the opener against Premier League side Chelsea in an FA Cup Third Round at Stamford Bridge on 8 January 2005, though Chelsea eventually ran out 3–1 winners.[3]

Barnsley

Hayes joined League One side Barnsley in the summer of 2005, making 56 appearances during the 2005/06 season and impressing the Oakwell faithful highly by scoring the opener in the 2006 League One play-off Final against Swansea City. A 2–2 scoreline saw the game go to penalties, with Hayes converting his spot kick to help Barnsley to a 4–3 shootout win and promotion to the Championship. Hayes made 33 appearances for Barnsley during the 2006/07 season and scored five goals, including a spell of four goals in six games early in the season.

Loan to Huddersfield Town

On 23 February 2007, Hayes joined League One side Huddersfield Town on loan with view to a permanent deal, as cover for striker Andy Booth, partially because he was falling down Barnsley's pecking order following the signing of Hungarian duo István Ferenczi and Péter Rajczi.[4] On 10 March 2007, he scored his first and what turned out to be his only goal for Huddersfield in their 2–0 home victory against local neighbours Bradford City.[5] On 22 March, he returned to Scunthorpe after making four appearances for Huddersfield.

Return to Scunthorpe United

Hayes returned to Scunthorpe (now playing in the Championship) on a three-year deal in the summer of 2007. Hayes made 42 appearances during the 2007/08 season, but a run of five goals in the last three games of the season couldn't save the Iron from relegation to League One. Hayes found his form again during the 2008/09 season, making 57 appearances, scoring 19 goals and helping Scunthorpe to promotion to the Championship via the playoffs. He won the Scunthorpe Telegraph award for player of the season.[6] Hayes had a solid 2009/10 season in the Championship, making 51 appearances and scoring 13 goals, including a goal against Manchester City in a 4–2 FA Cup Fourth Round defeat on 24 January 2010.[7] A contract dispute saw Hayes attract attention from former club Norwich City,[6] but he left Scunthorpe at the end of the season. He ended his Scunthorpe career having made 266 appearances and scored 74 goals across his two spells at the club.

Preston North End

On 10 May 2010, he signed on a free transfer for Championship side Preston North End on a three-year contract.[8] He scored his first goal for Preston from the penalty spot in a 5–0 thrashing of Stockport County in the League Cup. Hayes then scored his second in the same game after a great run and set up by fellow striker Josh King.[9] He scored his first league goal in a 1–0 win over Portsmouth a few days later,[10] to take his run to three goals in three games. He made 26 appearances during the 2010/11 season, but managed to score only one further goal, the equaliser in a 1–1 draw with Doncaster Rovers on 12 April 2011. Hayes had his Preston contract terminated on 17 June 2011, amidst interest from Charlton Athletic.[11]

Return to Barnsley on loan

Hayes returned to Barnsley on loan on 23 October 2010 as part of a deal to extend Iain Hume's loan at Preston. He made seven appearances, scored no goals and returned to Preston in December.

Charlton Athletic

On 21 June 2011, it was announced that Hayes was a third of a triple signing completed by League One side Charlton Athletic.[12] He scored his first goal for Charlton in a 2–1 away win at Notts County. After the arrival and immediate impact of Yann Kermorgant, opportunities became limited for Hayes. He made 22 appearances and scored three goals during the 2011/12 season as Charlton strode to the League One title, securing promotion to the Championship. Amidst interest from former club Scunthorpe United, Hayes was made available for transfer by manager Chris Powell prior to the 2012/13 season.[13]

Loan to Wycombe Wanderers

On 24 February 2012, Hayes (along with Charlton Athletic teammate Gary Doherty) signed for fellow League One side Wycombe Wanderers on loan until the end of the 2011/12 season.[14] His arrival was inspirational as he scored two goals on his debut in a 5–0 win over Hartlepool United.[15] He went on a run of scoring six goals in six games for Wycombe and was recalled by Charlton on 23 March.[16]

Brentford

On 20 August 2012, Hayes signed on a free transfer for League One side Brentford on a three-year deal.[17] He made his first appearance as a substitute against Yeovil Town on 21 August, missing a penalty as Brentford lost 3–1. Hayes went 12 games without scoring, until he opened his account with both Brentford's goals in a 2–2 home draw with Hartlepool United on 27 October. On 10 November, Hayes scored the winner in a 2–1 victory over Carlisle United.[18] He scored two goals in three games in January 2013, in a victory over Southend United and a draw with Leyton Orient. He finished the 2012/13 season having made 32 appearances and scored six goals as Brentford missed out on promotion to League One after a 2–1 playoff final defeat to Yeovil Town. Hayes enjoyed a fine 2013/14 pre-season, scoring in friendly victories over Einheit Rudolstadt,[19] Millwall[20] and Cardiff City,[21] but he found himself behind Clayton Donaldson, Will Grigg and Farid El Alagui in the pecking order once the season started and was made available for loan by manager Uwe Rösler.[22] Hayes made his only first team appearance of the 2013/14 season in a 3–2 League Cup first round victory over hometown club Dagenham & Redbridge on 6 August.[23] He later found himself appearing for the Development Squad, playing three games and scoring two goals in the Professional Development League 2 South. Hayes' contract was terminated on 3 December 2013 and he left the club.[24] Following his departure, Hayes was linked with a move to Grimsby Town[25] and was taken on trial at former club Crawley Town,[26] but manager John Gregory did not offer him a contract.[27]

Loan to Crawley Town

Hayes signed for fellow League One side Crawley Town on a month's loan on 11 March 2013.[28] He scored his first Crawley goal in his second game for the club, a 2–2 draw with Walsall on 16 March.[29] He looked to have scored the winner, until future Brentford teammate Will Grigg bagged an equaliser for the Saddlers. Hayes' loan was extended until the end of the season on 8 April.[30] He scored his second Crawley goal in a 2–0 victory over Sheffield United on 9 April.[31] Hayes finished his Crawley spell having scored two goals in 11 appearances and returned to Brentford on 30 April, after Crawley's final match of the season.[32]

Loan to Plymouth Argyle

Amidst interest from Stevenage[33] and former club Scunthorpe United,[34] Hayes signed for League Two side Plymouth Argyle on a one-month loan deal on 4 October 2013.[35] He endured a fruitless spell and scored no goals in seven appearances and returned to Brentford on 4 November after Plymouth decided against extending his loan.[36]

Scunthorpe United (third spell)

Hayes trained with former club Scunthorpe United in December 2013 and played in a practice match for the Iron.[27][37] Hayes signed for Scunthorpe (now in League Two) for a third time in his career on 17 December 2013, on a contract running until the end of the 2013/14 season.[38]

Wycombe Wanderers (second spell)

On 15 May 2014, Hayes signed for Wycombe Wanderers following his release from Scunthorpe United.[39]
