Parasram Gurjar (allegedly 10 October 1886? – 10 December 2011) was a native of the Talkesari village in Hoshangabad district in India and a farmer by trade.[1][2] According to his family, he was believed to be the oldest man in India.[3][4] He allegedly died at the age of 125, making him three years older than Jeanne Calment, the oldest verified person ever. Gurjar was awarded the Shatayu Samman award on October 1, 2011 on World Elders' Day.[5]

Biography

Gurjar was allegedly born on October 10, 1886, according to his Vanshwali, or family tree. According to his family members, he was very fit for his age, and could eat most anything. He suffered from no illnesses, except for a "mild hearing problem".[6] He died on December 10, 2011, in Bhopal, India. His last wish was reportedly to run an organisation to make people aware and stop female foeticide.[7] Shortly before his death, he asked his grandson Hakam Singh Gurjar to fetch him some water from the Narmada river.[4][8][9] After drinking the water, he collapsed and was hurriedly sent to Hamidia Hospital.[4] Thereafter, attempts to resurrect him were in vain and doctors declared him officially dead. He was survived by one son, fourteen grandchildren and three great-grand children.[1] The Medical Board of Madhya Pradesh has officially certified that Gurjar is more than 90 years old, although it could not certify that his age exceeded 90 years.[5] The family of Gurjar has written to the India Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to make arrangements for verification of age of older people.[5] Besides that, they have also written to the Guinness World Records.[1][5]
