Po Leung Kuk Vicwood K. T. Chong Sixth Form College (KTC) is a government-subsidised sixth form college in Kowloon, Hong Kong.[4] It was established on 26 July 1991 with the vision to provide quality education to secondary pupils matriculating after Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, and prepares pupils for the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination. The continuing education sector of the College also provides adult education and once offered associate degree courses. The College also offered joint-degree courses with Australian university The University of Ballarat in 1996, and The University of Victoria later.
Being the first and only sixth form college in Hong Kong, the College reformed its structure for the new Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education curricula. It is now offering education to form four to form six pupils (24 classes). Its main feeder is Po Leung Kuk Tong Nai Kan Junior Secondary College.
The current headmaster of the College is Dr Lee Poon Shing, former headmaster of Fukien Secondary School Affiliated School[5] and vice-president (teaching and learning) and Dean of humanities of GT (Ellen Yeung) College.[6] The current president and supervisor is The Honourable Ms Angela Leong On-kei, also the current chairman of Po Leung Kuk.
History
Establishment (1991)
The College was established on 26 July 1991 as a co-educational college[7] which focused on the Hong Kong A-level Examinations.[8] It was Hong Kong's first government-subsidised sixth form school,[9] on the former premises of Po Leung Kuk Wu Chung College, which had relocated to Sha Tin. The site was originally that of a primary school. In its first year, the school offered a total of 16 disciplines with Use of English being the only compulsory module. The social sciences stream of the College was highly innovative, offering economics, principles of accounts, pure mathematics, business studies, and geography. Dr Darnay Chan was the first headmaster of the College, previously having been the head of Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College in Tuen Mun.
It officially opened on 12 March 1992 with an opening ceremony officiated by former Secretariat for Education (then Secretary for Home Affairs), The Hon Michael Suen, GBS, CBE, JP.
While graduates tend to celebrate graduation with traditional graduation dinners usually locate in international hotels, the official ceremony for graduation are the speech days. The first speech day was held on 8 May 1993, officiated by Professor Gungwu Wang, CBE, then vice-chancellor of The University of Hong Kong. It has developed into a tradition for the College's founding father, His Excellency Sultan Vicwood KT Chong (MBE, JP, Doctor of Laws), to hand out diplomas to honourable graduates of the College.[10]
Academic Excellence
The College has quickly become a symbol of academic excellence in Hong Kong,[8] with extraordinary results in Hong Kong A-level Examinations and very high admission scores.[11] According to the statistics provided by the College, the pass rates for all subjects have never been below the averages of Hong Kong's, while the credit rates for all subjects have been significantly above those of Hong Kong's since 1995, the third cohort. Since 2007, the pass rates have been equal or close to 100%, with credit rates above 50%, and climbed to close to 80% since 2011.
Education
The College started offering joint-degree programmes with numerous overseas universities such as The University of Victoria, Canada and The University of Ballarat, Australia in 1996. Then headmaster, Dr Chan, pointed out when he signed the agreement with the vice-chancellor of Ballarat University, Professor David James, that the College had decided upon such direction due to the high academic qualifications of its academic team. The College's schoolteachers were considered equals to undergraduate lecturers.
In 2000, the College was in preparation to be the first community college in Hong Kong, offered associate degree courses with the first graduation held in May 2004.
