Ohel David Synagogue
Ohel David Synagogue, also called Lal Deval or Lal Deul is a synagogue in Pune, India. It is located on Moledina Road in Pune. It was constructed by philanthropist David Sassoon in 1867. Built in the English Gothic style, it was designed by Henry Saint Clair Wilkins,[1] this red brick and trap stone structure resembles a church. The construction is of English Gothic type it has 90 feet high obelisk on which a watch is hung, which was brought specially from London.[2]
It being an important part of cultural heritage of India used to be a well known tourist attractions. However, presently only Jews are allowed inside the synagogue. The building has been painted recently robbing it of its 'heritage look' normally associated with such buildings. Also the clock in the tower has stopped working.
Lal Deval is Asia's largest synagogue (outside Israel).
