"New Inside" is a song by American singer Tiffany, released as the lead single from her third studio album New Inside in 1990.[1]
Background
"New Inside" was written by Phillip Damien and Donnie Wahlberg of the New Kids, under the name Dennis Cheese. Damien solely produced the song whilst Cheese was also credited with the rap of the track. The song, like the New Inside album, marked a change of musical direction for Tiffany, as an attempt to move away from pop by embracing a tougher urban contemporary R&B sound.[2] The song failed to enter the American charts, whilst also failing to make an impression elsewhere except Japan where the song peaked at #18, and stayed in the Top 100 for a total of nine weeks. Originally the song debuted at #82 and was last seen on the chart in early December 1990 at #90.[3][4]
In America, the New Inside album and single was not the commercial success hoped. The title song managed to gain a minor amount of airplay in some areas and reached some local radio stations' request-based countdowns thanks to the efforts of fans, who were starting to get organized on bulletin board systems and online services.
In a 2012 article based on Tiffany by Audio Video Revolution, the singer spoke about the title track and the message behind the album/song, stating "When New Kids On The Block started opening for me on the first round of the tour, I think that opened my eyes a lot, too, because I saw so much how they would nurture their ideas rather than squash them. Sometimes their ideas were outlandish and it was, "We will get there, but we're not there now. But that's a good idea a year from now." A lot of people around me made me feel silly to be saying things, or just didn't listen. So I kind of knew that wasn't going to work in a long-term career. When I finally started working on the New Inside project and "New Inside" itself, that's exactly what the song is about. Of course, we made it about a love relationship, but the song is really more about busting down those walls, changing things, being open-minded, pushing yourself a little bit and being a little "new inside."[5]
Release
The single was released in America, Canada, Germany and Japan via MCA Records.[1] In America, it was released on CD Single as the main release.[6] As an additional release, an American CD Promotional Single was also released as well under the title "New Inside (Remixes)".[7] In America and Canada, it was also released on 12" vinyl.[8] In Germany, the song was released on 7" vinyl, 12" vinyl and CD,[1] whilst in Japan it was released on both CD and as a promotional mini-CD.[9] In Europe, a test pressing with the category number TIF-2 was also in circulation but under no record label.[10]
Whilst the album version of the song lasted a duration of 5:35, there were five remixes made. The "Radio Edit" or "7" Edit" version was cut down by over half a minute, whilst the 7" German release had another edit that cut the track by over one minute. An "Extended Remix" lasted a duration of 6:27, whilst an "Instrumental" remix was also released, along with a two-minute mix under the name "New Inside (Bonus Beats)".[8] All releases of the single that featured a sleeve used the same artwork – highlighting a close-up photograph of Tiffany.[11]
Following the original release on the New Inside album and as a single, the song has also appeared on the 1996 Tiffany compilation Best One, released in Japan only by Universal/MCA.[12]
Promotion
No music video was created for the single, unlike the following single "Here in My Heart".
Tiffany performed the song on German TV show Eurotops, which featured two backing male dancers and screened effects behind Tiffany and the dancers. In December 2009, the performance clip was unofficially uploaded to YouTube where it has since gained over 16,000 views.[13]
A live performance of the song was professionally filmed for Chile (South America) in 1990 on the UCTV Channel Martes 13, with presenters Javier Miranda and Viviana Nunes.[14] Another professionally filmed recording of the song was live at Poland's Sopot Festival in 1990.[15]
