Prelude

The Rocinante is down for long-term maintenance after the events of Cibola Burn. Three crew members decide to take care of some personal business during the down time.

Plot

James Holden is stuck alone with the Rocinante at Tycho Station, monitoring repairs and digging in to a mystery involving ships disappearing as they go through the gate. A sudden attack on Tycho brings to light a new threat to humanity and potentially the galaxy through theft of the last known sample of the protomolecule. As the new bodyguard for Fred Johnson, his task is to take his charge to Earth using the Rocinante with a new crew when an emergency meeting is called.

Amos Burton, the crew’s mechanic and muscle, gets word that an old friend on Earth has died. He makes a trip down the well to make sure that no foul play was involved. Through his investigations, he contacts multiple old friends, but ends up staying too long when a radical fringe of the Outer Planets Alliance starts dropping rocks on Earth to reset the balance of solar system power. Amos’ prime goal becomes leaving his home planet, with the help of an unexpected ally.

Alex Kamal, Rocinante’s pilot feels that he’s left some things undone from his previous life. Making a trip back to Mars to visit family and his ex-wife, he reconnects with Bobbie Draper. The two of them end up in the middle of a battle as the foundations of solar system power are shaken.

Naomi Nagata receives the only call that could pull her away from the Rocinante. Her son is in trouble, and the father describes a situation that only Naomi can get the boy out of. Diving back into the world of the OPA, she finds out she’s played an unwitting role in many historical events, and only a glimmer of that knowledge made her suicidal in the past. Current sins are much worse, however, and will require more extreme action.
