Naphcon-A
Naphcon-A is a brand of eye drops produced by Alcon Laboratories, Inc., a pharmaceutical products company based in Fort Worth, Texas. It is said to relieve the symptoms of itchy red eyes.[1]
The two active ingredients in Naphcon-A are naphazoline hydrochloride (0.025%), a vasoconstrictor to eliminate redness of the eyes, and pheniramine maleate (0.3%), an antihistamine to stop itching.[2] It also contains benzalkonium chloride (0.01%) as a preservative.
Use
Naphcon-A is administered topically with 1 to 2 drops applied to the affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily.[2]
Adverse effects
- Pupils may become enlarged temporarily
- Overuse may cause more redness
- Those with heart disease, high blood pressure, narrow angle glaucoma or who have urination trouble are discouraged from using the product
- It is recommended to remove contact lenses before use. Use with contact lenses can lead to reduced oxygenation of the underlying cornea
- If infants or children accidentally ingest the drops, it may lead to coma and significant reduction in body temperature. If such ingestion occurs, immediately calling a poison control center is recommended[2]
