Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR) is a member of the Urban Teacher Residency United network and located in Memphis, Tennessee. MTR is a faith-based, four-year teacher preparation program based on the residency model. During the residency year, residents train with a mentor, receive coaching, and take Masters in Urban Education coursework through Union University. After the first year, residents earn a Masters in Urban Education degree and pursue employment in local, urban, high-needs schools. During the next three years, residents teach in local schools while continuing to receive coaching, training, and support through MTR.
In 2012, MTR was shown to be one of the most effective teacher preparation programs in the state of Tennessee. [1] [2] The Memphis Teacher Residency believes that Urban Education is the Greatest Social Justice and Civil Rights Issue in America Today. They have made many steps towards reforming education in the country starting with Memphis. During Summer of 2013, MTR began MTR Camp, an academic enrichment camp with the goal of reducing the achievement gaps that often widens during summer months, as well as providing college students interested in urban education an internship and learning experience. MTR Camp will expand to multiple schools in Summer 2015.
Mission: As a response to the Gospel mandate to love our neighbors as ourselves, MTR will provide students in partner low-income Memphis neighborhoods with same, or better, quality of education as is available to any student in Memphis by recruiting, training, and supporting effective teachers within a Christian context.
