Marc A. Thorpe is an American architect and designer based in New York City. He founded the eponymous design practice, Marc Thorpe Design (MTD) in 2005 after studying architecture from the Parsons School of Design and currently serves as the principal architect and creative director at the firm.[2]

Early life and education

Thorpe was born in Maryland in 1978.[1] He earned his B.A. in graphic and industrial design from the University of Maryland followed in 2004 by a Master of Architecture degree from the Parsons School of Design, with honors.[3]

Career

Thorpe founded Marc Thorpe Design, a design firm in 2005[4] and started his career with architecture, interiors, product design and branding.[4] He has designed for the commercial, residential, and leisure sectors;[3] and has collaborated many brands including Moroso, an Italian design house and furniture manufacturer.[5] The Mark Table, designed by Thorpe in 2010, was his first collaboration with Moroso. In 2012, he designed the Blur Sofa for Moroso, of which the design gained considerable global media attention.[6][7]

In 2010, Infiniti commissioned him to design their exhibition at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance to reveal the companies latest car designs.[8] He designed Morning Glory tables for Moroso in 2014, which were presented at Milan Furniture Fair. The tables are made from powder-coated welded steel rods for the stems and laser cut bent steel plates for the leaves. The design gained considerable media attention.[9] In 2013, Thorpe designed the first outlet of Under Armour in Shanghai China, a 2,500-square-foot interactive media experience space at the Jing An Kerry Centre.[10][11]

Thorpe has taught in the architecture department at Parsons School of Design, and in the industrial design department at Pratt Institute. He currently teaches in the department of design, digital art, and film at New York University.[3][12] Through his firm, he has worked with Stella Artois, Acura, Esquire and Davidoff. He has also collaborated with Bernhardt, David Yurman, Quinze & Milan, Casamania and Target.[13][14]

In the media

Writing about the Edge Cocktail Table, one of Thorpe's early designs, Wallpaper wrote, "Made out of tempered smoked glass, it's welcome to dock in our living room any time."[15] In 2010, Vogue Living editor, David Clark reviewing the Mark Table said that "The Mark cantilevered occasional table was minimal in its design but loud in colour."[16] Elle Decor India wrote that Thorpe is "a watch-out-for name at Salone, this budding talent is part of the fresh creative wave on American shores."[17]

Vogue Living wrote for Blur Sofa that, "Marc Thorpe challenged perceptions of space and scale with his prototype for the Blur Sofa shown at Moroso"[18] and Frame wrote "even more detailed is the material used to cover Marc Thorpe's Blur Sofa for Moroso, which undergoes a gradual tonal gradation from red to white. Only with your nose practically pressed against the surface of the sofa can you distinguish the minuscule red and white stitches that cause the 'blur'."[19]
