The mandatory referendum (German Obligatorisches Referendum, French: Référendum obligatoire) is an instrument of direct democracy in Switzerland. It is a mechanism that holds mandatory votation of some decisions of the parliament, such as modifications of the Swiss Federal Constitution or adhesion to supranational communities.
It is different from the optional referendum in that no collection of signatures is necessary to organise the referendum.
