General Mahmoud Kaveh (22 May 1961 – 2 September 1986) was an Iranian commander of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution and one of the main figures in Iran–Iraq War.[1]

Early life

He was born on 22 May 1961 in Mashhad. His father was a religious tradespeople in Mashhad during shah regime. His father was associated with Ali Khamenei and also Abdul Kareem Hashemi Nejad. He attached great importance to the religious education of his son and took him to religious gatherings and prayer. Alongside studying in high school, he started studying religious science in Mashhad Hawza.[2] [3] [4] [5]

1979 Revolution

With the rise of anti-regime activities, Kaveh who was an active religious young man, participated in preaching of Ali Khamenei in Imam Hassan Mojtaba and Javadolaemeh masque which were central places for opposition groups gathering. He tried a lot to affect his classmates and show them the oppression of shah regime. He actively distributed Ruhollah Khomeini's flyers and participated in all anti regime protests.[2][3][4][5]

After revolution of 1979

After Islamic revolution, Kaveh was one of the first persons who joined IRGC in Mashhad. He was trained for six months and then started training. He was dispatched to Tehran to be a member of Ruhollah Khomeini's protection guard.[2][3][4][5]

Iran-Iraq war

Kaveh was 19 when Iran-Iraq war was started. He was dispatched to southern war zones. But due to lacking of trainer, he was sent back to Mashhad and started training in garrisons. Although he attached great importance to training, it was really hard for him not to attend the war directly, so he decided to go to Kurdistan province to oppose counter-revolution. Soon and because of his competence and courage, he was appointed as the operation commander of IRGC in Saqqez.[2][3][4][5]

Vizhe Shohada Brigade

By establishment of Vizhe Shohada Brigade, Kaveh was appointed as the operation commander of this brigade. In a short time he could regain many different regions that were occupied by counter-revolution. For example:

Kaveh was one of the youngest commanders during Iran–Iraq War.He was killed on 2 September 1986 in Ahwaz due to injuries suffered from mortar shrapnel, he was 25 at the time of his death. His body was sent to Tehran and buried at Behesht-e Zahra cemetery.[2][3]
