Lyryx Learning Inc. (Lyryx) is a privately held educational software company founded in 2000 at the University of Calgary, in the province of Alberta.
History
In 1997 Claude Laflamme and Keith Nicholson, Professors in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Calgary, began work on the design of online tools to support student learning in their classes. Laflamme and Nicholson developed and implemented a system which provided substantive feedback to students based on their work, creating an effective formative assessment system. The system goes well beyond the typical right/wrong summative grading technique of multiple choice style programs.
In 2000, Laflamme and Nicholson, together with two key contributors, Bruce Bauslaugh and Richard Cannings, decided to build a company to offer this platform to students in a number of quantitative disciplines. By 2010, Lyryx supported approximately 100,000 students and 2,000 instructors per year in Canada alone.
In 2013, Lyryx became a fully independent publisher supporting open educational resources.[1]
Lyryx with Open Texts
After several years of developing formative online assessment for content from various publishers, including McGraw-Hill Ryerson in Canada and Flat World Knowledge in the US,[2] Lyryx returned to its roots in 2013 and launched Lyryx with Open Texts, a complete and adapted open content and support service for Introductory Service Courses in Mathematics & Statistics and Business & Economics.
