Loyola Industrial Training Institute, Bangalore in India offers two-year programs as well as an array of shorter courses to prepare technicians for private practice and for industry. The Jesuits began this work among disadvantaged youth and it has grown into a trade school with diverse offerings.
History
Loyola ITI is a work of the Karnataka Province of the Society of Jesus. This society (the "Jesuits") were founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius of Loyola, who came from that castle town in northern Spain. The Jesuits began their educational efforts in Karnataka over 100 years ago, with a focus on the less advantaged youth. Loyola ITI originated with non-formal courses in areas like tailoring, carpentry, welding, and driving. In response to the need in local industry the present courses in Electronics and Motor Vehicle Mechanics were developed. The earlier courses were replaced by new non-formal courses in computer applications, automobile mechanisms, and refrigeration and air-conditioning.[2]
Program
Loyola, Bangalore, boasts of minimal fees, good connections with industry, well-equipped workshops, a trades library with over 4,000 volumes, and free basic computer and AutoCAD training for the students. There is also a boys hostel and free lunch program for the needy, and a low-priced canteen. For more rounded human development, sports and extracurriculars are sponsored along with training and seminars for personality development. Visits to industries are arranged to get hands-on job training. Students are given driving instructions at reduced rates. Finally, there is a language lab to improve students' spoken English, along with an audiovisual room.
The school's motto is Lucet et Ardet, "Shine to Enkindle", referring to the mind and the heart.[3]
