The car carrier developed a severe list in the Bay of Biscay 148 nautical miles (274 km) off Cape Ortegal, Spain. Her 22 crew were evacuated by helicopter.[8] Modern Express proceeded to drift for several days, and was sighted off the coast of France, but was successfully taken under tow by the tug Centaurus ( Spain) on 1 February.[9] She arrived at Bilbao, Spain on 3 February.[10] Modern Express was declared a total loss. She departed under to on 20 September for scrapping at Aliağa, Turkey.[11] |
