List of international cricket five-wicket hauls at the Asgiriya Stadium
Asgiriya Stadium is a sports ground in Kandy, Sri Lanka, which has hosted international cricket matches, along with many domestic and school games. It is the home of the Kandy Cricket Club.[1] It has hosted international cricket matches since 1983 until 2007, the first Test at the ground taking place in between Sri Lanka and Australia in April of that year.[2] and has been home to 22 Test matches in total.[3] Asgiriya Stadium has also staged 6 One Day International (ODI) matches,[4] the first of which was in 1986 when the host Sri Lanka lost to Pakistan by 8 wickets.[5]
In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer")[6] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[7] The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test match at Asgiriya Stadium was Venkatesh Prasad in 2001; he finished with bowling figures of 5 for 72 in third innings. Muttiah Muralitharan currently holds most five-wicket hauls more than any other on this ground with 9 five-wicket hauls. The best figures in Test cricket at Asgiriya Stadium are 7 for 94, also taken by Muralitharan against Zimbabwe in January 2002.[8] Muralitharan also took the last five-wicket haul at Asgiriya Stadium, with figures of 6 wickets for 55 runs against England in 1 December 2007.[9] Until Asgiriya Stadium abandoned from all international matches, seven bowlers have taken seventeen Test match five-wicket hauls at the ground.[10]
There are no any ODI five-wicket hauls taken at Asgiriya Stadium until last ODI on 16 December 2001.
