List of United States divisions during World War II

The following is a list of United States Army and United States Marine Corps divisions of World War II. The United States began the war with only a handful of active divisions: five infantry and one cavalry. By the end of the war, the nation had fielded nearly one hundred. This has been called "the 90-Division Gamble".^[1] Additionally, due to the US Army's method of employment combined with events of the war, the United States did not suffer the destruction of any of its division-size units during the conflict, except for the Philippine Division in 1942. US Army Divisions

Armored Divisions

1st Armored Division: Formed in 1940, the 1st served in North Africa from November 1942 to May 1943 and in Italy from October 1943 to the end of the war.
2nd Armored Division: Formed in 1940, the 2nd served in North Africa from November 1942 to May 1943, landed in Sicily in July 1943, and participated in the liberation of France from June 1944 to the end of the war.
3rd Armored Division: Formed in 1941, the 3rd served in NW Europe from June 1944 to the end of the war.
4th Armored Division: Formed in 1941, the 4th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
5th Armored Division: Formed in 1941, the 5th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
6th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 6th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
7th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 7th served in NW Europe from August 1944 to the end of the war.
8th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 8th served in NW Europe from January 1945 to the end of the war.
9th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 9th served in NW Europe from December 1944 to the end of the war.
10th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 10th served in NW Europe from September 1944 to the end of the war.
11th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 11th served in NW Europe from December 1944 to the end of the war.
12th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 12th served in NW Europe from November 1944 to the end of the war.
13th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 13th served in NW Europe from January 1945 to the end of the war.
14th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 14th served in NW Europe from October 1944 to the end of the war.
16th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 16th served in NW Europe from February 1945 to the end of the war.
20th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 20th served in NW Europe from February 1945 to the end of the war.

Cavalry Divisions

1st Cavalry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 1st served in the Pacific from December 1943 to the end of the war.
2nd Cavalry Division: Formed in 1942, the 2nd never engaged in combat. It was assigned to construct airfields in North Africa. Deactivated in 1944.

1st Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 1st served in North Africa from November 1942 to May 1943, in Sicily from June 1943 to August 1943, and in NW Europe from June 1944 to the end of the war.
2nd Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 2nd served in NW Europe from June 1944 to the end of the war.
3rd Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 3rd served in North Africa from November 1942, in Sicily from July 1943, in Italy from September 1943, and landed in Southern France in August 1944.
4th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 4th served in NW Europe from June 1944 to the end of the war.
5th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 5th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
6th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 6th served in the Pacific from January 1944 to the end of the war.
7th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 7th served in the Pacific from May 1943 to the end of the war.
8th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 8th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
9th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 9th landed in North Africa in November 1942, in Sicily in July 1943, in Italy in September 1943, and in NW Europe from June 1944 to the end of the war.
10th Infantry Division: Formed as the 10th Mountain Division
11th Infantry Division: Formed as the 11th Airborne Division
12th Infantry Division: Formed as the Philippine Division and was surrendered at Bataan in 1942, reconstituted in 1944, disbanded in 1947
13th Infantry Division: Formed as the 13th Airborne Division
17th Infantry Division: Formed as the 17th Airborne Division
23rd Infantry Division: Formed as the Americal Division in 1942, served in the Pacific from October 1942 to the end of the war.
24th Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 24th served in the Pacific from April 1944 to the end of the war.
25th Infantry Division (United States): Formed in 1941, the 25th served in the Pacific from December 1942 to the end of the war.
26th Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 26th served in NW Europe from September 1944 to the end of the war.
27th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 27th served in the Pacific from June 1944 to the end of the war.
28th Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 28th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
29th Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 29th served in NW Europe from June 1944 to the end of the war.
30th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 30th served in NW Europe from June 1944 to the end of the war.
31st Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 31st served in the Pacific from March 1944 to the end of the war.
32nd Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 32nd served in the Pacific from September 1942 to the end of the war.
33rd Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 33rd served in the Pacific from December 1944 to the end of the war.
34th Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 34th served in North Africa from November 1942 to May 1943, and in Italy from September 1943 to the end of the war.
35th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 35th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
36th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 36th served in North Africa from April to May 1943, in Italy from September 1943 to July 1944, and in Southern France from August 1944 to the end of the war.
37th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 37th served in the Pacific from July 1943 to the end of the war.
38th Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 38th served in the Pacific from December 1944 to the end of the war.
39th Infantry Division: Not activated, however elements of this division would see action as parts of other divisions.
40th Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 40th served in the Pacific from April 1944 to the end of the war.
41st Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 41st served in the Pacific from January 1943 to the end of the war.
42nd Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 42nd served in Northwest Europe from January 1945 to the end of the war.
43rd Infantry Division: Formed in 1941, the 43rd served in the Pacific from July 1943 to the end of the war.
44th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 44th served in Northwest Europe from September 1944 to the end of the war.
45th Infantry Division: Formed in 1940, the 45th served in Sicily in July and August 1943, then in Italy through July 1944, and in Northwest Europe via Southern France from August 1944 to the end of the war.
63rd Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 63rd served in Northwest Europe from January 1945 to the end of the war.
65th Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 65th served in Northwest Europe from January 1945 to the end of the war.
66th Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 66th served in Northwest Europe from December 1944 to the end of the war.
69th Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 69th saw combat in Germany from 12 February to 7 September 1945.
70th Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 70th saw combat in Germany from 28 December 1944 to the end of the war
71st Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 71st saw combat in Germany from 11 March 1945 until its deactivation on 1 March 1946
75th Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 75th first saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge and was active until 13 April 1945
76th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 76th served in Northwest Europe from January 1945 until the end of the war.
77th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 77th served in the Pacific from 21 July 1944 until 15 March 1946
78th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 78th served in Northwest Europe from 10 December 1944 to 22 May 1946
79th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 79th served in Europe from June 1944 until April 1945
80th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 80th served in Northwest and Central Europe from August 1944 until April 1945
81st Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 81st served in the Pacific from June 1944 to January 1946
82nd Infantry Division: Formed as the 82nd Airborne Division
83rd Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 83rd saw combat in Northwest and Central Europe from 27 June 1944 to 6 May 1945
84th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 84th served in Northwest and Central Europe from 18 November 1944 to 2 May 1945
85th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 85th served in Italy from 10 April 1944 to 2 May 1945
86th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 86th served in Germany from 24 March 1945 until Victory in Europe Day; then were redeployed to the Philippines on August 1945
87th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 87th served in Europe from 12 November 1944 to the end of the war
88th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 88th served in North Africa and Southern and Central Europe from December 1943 until 2 May 1945
89th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 89th served in Central Europe from January 1945 until Victory in Europe Day
90th Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 90th served in Europe from 6 June 1944 to the end of the war
91st Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 91st served Southern Europe from January 1943 to October 1945
92nd Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 92nd was a segregated division which saw combat in Italy from 1942 to 1945
93rd Infantry Division: Existing prior to 1940, the 93rd was a segregated division which saw combat in the South Pacific from 1944 to the end of the war
94th Infantry Division: Formed in 1942, the 94th served in NW Europe and Central Europe from September 1944 until the end of the war.
95th Infantry Division: Formed in 1942, the 95th served in NW Europe from October 1944 to April 1945
96th Infantry Division: Formed in 1942, the 96th served in the Pacific Theater from October 1944 to June 1945
97th Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 97th served in the NW Europe from 1945 and the Pacific Theater from 1945 to March 1946—only one of two divisions to serve in these two theaters*
98th Infantry Division: Formed in 1942, the 98th served in the Pacific, including the Occupation of Japan until its deactivation, Feb.1946.
99th Infantry Division: Formed in 1942, the 99th served in Europe until April 1945.
100th Infantry Division: Formed in 1942, the 100th served in Europe until January 1946.
101st Infantry Division—the 101st Airborne Division: Formed in 1921 and reformed in 1942
102nd Infantry Division: Activated in 1942, the 102nd served in Europe from November 1944 until its inactivation in 1946.
103rd Infantry Division: Activated in 1942, the 103rd served in Europe from November 1944 until September 1945.
104th Infantry Division: The 104th served in Europe from August 1944 through June 1945
106th Infantry Division: Formed in 1942, the 106th served in NW Europe until April 1945.
