KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (この素晴らしい世界に祝福を! Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o!, lit. "Give Blessings on This Wonderful World!") is a Japanese novel series written by Natsume Akatsuki. The series follows a boy who is sent to a fantasy world following his death, forming a dysfunctional party with a goddess, a magician, and a crusader to fight against monsters. Beginning as a web novel series published on Shousetsuka ni Narou between December 2012 and October 2013, the series was revised into a printed light novel series with illustrations by Kurone Mishima, which began publication under Kadokawa Shoten's Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko Imprint from October 2013.

A manga adaptation, illustrated by Masahito Watari, began serialization in Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age magazine from October 2014. A radio drama CD was released by HobiRecords in March 2015, and a television anime adaptation by Studio Deen aired in Japan between January and March 2016. A second season has been announced,[1] and will air on January 11, 2017.[2][3] A spin-off light novel series, Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Bakuen o!, began publication from July 2014.

Both the light novels and the manga are licensed in North America by Yen Press.

Plot

Following an untimely and embarrassing death, Kazuma Satō, a Japanese teenage shut-in, meets a goddess named Aqua, who offers to reincarnate him in a parallel world with MMORPG elements, where he can go on adventures and battle monsters. Despite being offered a godlike item or ability to use in this new world, Kazuma, following some provocation, chooses Aqua herself to accompany him to the town of Axel, quickly finding her below average intelligence to be less than beneficial.LN 1.P. With Aqua unable to return to the afterlife until the Devil King is defeated, the two form a party and recruit two other members; an explosion-obsessed magician named Megumin and a masochistic crusader named Darkness.LN 1.2 Due to the party's dysfunctional abilities, Kazuma quickly gives up on the idea of defeating the Devil King and tries to live a luxurious lifestyle, only to find the circumstances of his daily life force him and his party to encounter and battle the Devil King's generals.LN 2.3

The main protagonist. A sixteen-year-old Japanese teenager who became a game-obsessed shut-in after having his heart broken over his childhood friend during middle school.LN 5.2 He is sent to the parallel reality after dying from acute stress reaction, forcing Aqua to come with him after she irritates him with her attitude. Kazuma is classed as an Adventurer which, despite being the lowest ranked class, allows him to learn various skills from other classes, albeit at an increased cost.LN 1.2 With his ability, Kazuma learns basic skills such as stealing, archery, monster detection, and basic magic.
Aqua (アクア Akua)

The goddess of water who judged humans to send to the RPG world, up until Kazuma dragged her along with him.LN 1.P She is an energetic and simpleminded girl who likes to receive reverence for her status and gets upset easily. As an Archpriest and a goddess, she is powerful against demons and the undead, and is able to resurrect recently deceased people as well as purify water supplies. Rather than learning skills which would benefit her party, she spends most of her skill points learning Party Tricks.
Megumin (めぐみん)

An arch wizard who is descended from crimson demons; powerful humanoids who possess black hair and red eyes, and sport chūnibyō characteristics.LN 5.5 Megumin only knows a single spell, an incredibly powerful Explosion spell that immediately incapacitates her for the rest of the day when cast, and refuses to learn any other skills.LN 1.1
Darkness (ダクネス Dakunesu)

Novels

The original web novel series written by Natsume Akatsuki was published on Syosetu between December 2012 and October 2013.[7] The author also wrote a side story featuring Wiz and Vanir.[8] A light novel version with illustrations by Kurone Mishima began release under Kadokawa Shoten's Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint from October 1, 2013, with eight volumes released as of January 1, 2016.[9][10] The light novel diverges significantly from the web novel's plot from the sixth volume onwards, and also features changes to the characters' ages. A spin-off light novel series, also written and illustrated by Akatsuki and Mishima respectively, titled Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Bakuen wo! (この素晴らしい世界に爆焔を!?, lit. "Give Explosions to This Wonderful World!") , which takes place a year prior to the main series and focuses on Megumin, began release from July 1, 2014, with three volumes released as of June 1, 2015.[11] Another spin-off series featuring Vanir was published on April 1, 2016, called Kono Kamen no Akuma ni Sōdan wo! (この仮面の悪魔に相談を!?, lit. "Consulting with the Masked Devil!") .

Yen Press announced its license to the series on May 20, 2016.[12]

Manga

A manga adaption of KonoSuba illustrated by Masahito Watari began serialization in the October 2014 issue of Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age magazine on September 9, 2014.[26] Two tankōbon volumes have been released so far.

Yen Press announced its acquisition of the manga adaptation at the same time that it licensed the original light novels.[12]

Anime

A television anime adaptation by Studio Deen[32] aired on Tokyo Metropolitan Television between January 14, 2016 and March 16, 2016;[33] later broadcasting on eight other networks and several video on demand streaming networks.[33] The series was simulcast by Crunchyroll in several regions such as North America,[34] and by AnimeLab in Australia.[35] The series is being directed by Takaomi Kanasaki and written by Makoto Uezu with character designs by Koichi Kikuta.[32] An original video animation will be bundled with the ninth light novel of KonoSuba in June 2016.[36] The anime's opening theme is "Fantastic Dreamer" by Machico while the ending theme is "Chīsana Bōken-sha" (ちいさな冒険者, lit."Little Adventurer") performed by Sora Amamiya, Rie Takahashi, and Ai Kayano.[5] A second season has been announced,[1] and will premiere air on the 11th of January 2017.[2][3]

Reluctantly keeping Megumin in his party, Kazuma is then approached by a crusader named Darkness, who also seems to have a dubious quirk.

As Kazuma becomes cautious about Darkness' odd behavior, her thief friend Chris offers to teach him a Steal skill, which he inadvertently uses to steal girls' panties. Later, the entire town is brought together to defeat an army of cabbage monsters for the harvest, where Darkness demonstrates her ability to withstand enemy attacks while also showing off her nature as a masochist.

With hunting requests declining due to one of the Devil King's generals moving in nearby, Kazuma accompanies Megumin as she practises her explosion magic on a seemingly abandoned castle. This ends up infuriating the general, Verdia the Dullahan, who had been living in that very castle. Placing a death curse upon Darkness, Verdia demands that Megumin come to his castle within a week in order to save Darkness' life. Shortly after Verdia takes his leave, however, Aqua simply removes the curse from Darkness, eliminating the need to make the journey to the castle. 
5 "A Price for This Cursed Sword!"

Wanting to earn some money despite only hard quests being available, Aqua takes on a request to purify a lake filled with alligator monsters, with the others putting her in a cage to keep her safe. Though Aqua eventually gets the quest done, she is left somewhat traumatised from hours of alligator attacks. On the way back, the group encounter Kyouya Mitsurugi, another human Aqua had sent to Axel, who is less than pleased with the way Aqua is seemingly being treated. Kyouya challenges Kazuma to a duel but is quickly defeated after Kazuma steals the cursed sword he received when he came to the RPG world. The next day, after Kyouya becomes shocked to find that Kazuma had sold his sword, Verdia returns to the town, wondering why no one came to fight him. 
6 "A Conclusion to This Worthless Fight!"

Annoyed that Megumin had still been using his castle for explosion practise, Verdia, after proving easily susceptible to Aqua's purification magic, summons an undead army which is quickly defeated by Megumin's explosion magic. As Verdia then battles against Darkness, Kazuma deduces that he is weak against water and has Aqua attack him with a flood. Managing to weaken him, Kazuma manages to steal Verdia's head, giving Aqua the chance to defeat him with her magic. The next day, Kazuma and his party earn a hefty reward for defeating Verdia, which is immediately put towards paying off the damages Aqua's flood caused to the town. 
7 "A Second Death in This Freezing Season!"

Just as Eris offers him the chance to be reincarnated into the human world once again, Aqua uses her resurrection magic to bring Kazuma back to life.

After Wiz teaches Kazuma the Drain Touch skill, the party takes on a request to exorcise evil spirits from a mansion, where they can stay during the winter. Later that night, Kazuma and Megumin find themselves on the run from an army of possessed dolls while also desperately needing the bathroom. The following morning, Aqua reveals that her actions after first meeting Wiz led to the mansion being haunted in the first place.

Kazuma and his adventure friends Keith and Dust go to a shop run by succubi who provide male adventurers with much needed relief by giving them erotic dreams. After having a luxurious crab meal and briefly falling asleep in the bath, Kazuma mistakes Darkness for the succubus he chose when she enters the bath to and tries to order her to do dubious things. That is until he discovers Aqua has captured the actual succubus, leading Kazuma to get beaten up by the others while trying to help her escape. The next day, a mobile fortress known as the Destroyer approaches town.

With their members being perfectly suited for the job, Kazuma's party, along with Wiz, are chosen to lead an attack against the Destroyer. Meanwhile, Darkness tells Kazuma that her true name is Dustiness Ford Lalatina, the daughter of a well-regarded family. Using Aqua's barrier breaking spells and Megumin and Wiz's explosion magic, the party manage to take down the Destroyer, only to set off a self-destruct sequence. Heading inside to find a way to stop the Destroyer from exploding, Kazuma manages to find the power source and has Wiz teleport it elsewhere, before Megumin uses a powered-up explosion to destroy the fortress. As peace returns to the town, Kazuma finds himself under arrest as the power source he teleported away ends up destroying a noble's mansion.

Kazuma's party visits Wiz's shop when Yunyun jumps out from behind some shelves, challenging Megumin to a duel. This sets off a chain of events in the shop that leads to Kazuma trying on a choker that supposedly grants wishes. Wiz informs Kazuma that the choker actually strangles the wearer in four days if they don't fulfill the wish they made while putting it on. After being horrified, Kazuma guilts his female companions, plus Wiz and Yunyun, into fulfilling his every whim. On the fourth day, Kazuma finds himself at peace enough to tell each of the girls that he mostly liked them for their boobs. Suddenly, the choker falls off, as his wish in Wiz's shop for "peace and quiet" had been fulfilled. Some time later, Kazuma finds himself sitting in a chair across from Eris, implying that Aqua strangled him with the choker. 

Other media

A radio drama CD, featuring a different voice cast to the anime, was released by HobiRecords on March 1, 2015.[4] A PC video game developed by game creator Tachi, titled Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! in the life!, is be bundled with the first Blu-ray Disc/DVD volume of the anime series on March 25, 2016.[47] The game is developed using software RPG Tsukūru VX.[48]

Reception

Reviewing the first few episodes, Anime News Network's Theron Martin praised the anime adaptation for its comedy, calling the second episode "the funniest episode of anime I have seen since Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun aired". Martin also praised the series' musical score though criticised the artistry for occasionally inconsistent character animation.[49]

As of March 2, 2016, the 11-volume series has a total of 1.5 million copies in print, each volume selling 136,000 copies.[50]
