John Hannett

John Hannett (born 23 June 1953) is General Secretary of the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW).[1]

Early life

He was born in Liverpool. He left school at 16.

Career

He became a Low Pay Commissioner in May 2007.[2] He sits on the TUC Executive Committee and General Council. He sat on the NEC of the Labour Party from 1998-2005. He is a trustee of the People's History Museum in Manchester.

USDAW

He became a district officer in 1985, then a national officer in 1990. The head office of USDAW is situated off the A6010, between Manchester High School for Girls and the University of Manchester's Fallowfield Campus in the south of Manchester, close to Platt Fields Park. 433,000 shopworkers belong to the union. USDAW's bi-monthly publication is entitled Network.

He became Deputy General Secretary in 1997. He became General Secretary of USDAW in May 2004, being re-elected in September 2008.

Personal life

He lives in the east of Liverpool.
