JR Shaw[1] OC AOE (born August 14, 1934) is a Canadian businessman. He founded Edmonton-based Shaw Communications in 1966 and is the current executive chairman of the company.[2] As of 2016, Shaw and other members of his family control 85 per cent of the Class A voting shares of Corus Entertainment and 78 per cent of the class A voting shares of Shaw Communications.[2] Shaw also currently sits on the board of directors of Suncor Energy.
Personal life
JR Shaw was born James Robert Shaw in Brigden, Ontario, the son of Lottie and Francis Shaw, and was raised on his family's farm. He moved to Edmonton in 1961. He is the father of Jim Shaw, former chief executive officer of Shaw Communications. He holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Michigan State University. He has received several honorary degrees, including ones from the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.
In 2002, Shaw legally changed his name from James Robert Shaw to JR Shaw.[1]
