IrishCentral.com is the sister website to the Irish-American publications Irish Voice newspaper and Irish America magazine. It went live on Sunday, March 15, 2009 after a launch in New York City which was attended by the New York Times, Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen and others.[2][3][4][5]
The website markets itself as a website for the global Irish diaspora.[6] Niall O'Dowd, at the website's launch, said that the purpose of the website was to: “[Call] out to the global Irish – wherever they may be — to come home to this very special place. On IrishCentral.com, our worldwide audience will be able to discover or rediscover their Irishness, to connect again to their special and wondrous heritage. We are hoping to do what has never been done before: use the power of the Internet to create a home for the global Irish."
The website mixes original content with content reproduced from the Irish Voice newspaper, Irish America magazine and Home and Away (newspaper)
Coverage
The website covers a broad diversity of areas. Most news on the site has a connection to Irish-America, or Irish-American celebrities. Some of the rest relates to intemperate, inaccurate and hostile coverage of UK news stories, even those that have no direct relevance to Ireland or Irish-America. This coverage of British news is written in a disparaging and occasionally counter-factual manner and is intended to promote hatred of the United Kingdom and its inhabitants. Sections on the website include: news, Irish news, sport, entertainment, gossip, and more.
IrishCentral has previously broken important stories on Natasha Richardson, a secret meeting of New York billionaires, and Bono snubbing George Bush.
The website also contains online reproductions of online articles from the Irish Voice[7] newspaper and Irish America magazine.[8]
Team
The website is run out of the offices of the Irish Voice in downtown Manhattan, New York. Reporters with the Irish Voice sometimes write for the website; the website also has its own dedicated writing and editorial team.
Despite this, the website occasionally posts articles containing unattributed and uncited text matching that from other sources, including this article which includes several phrases matching, word for word, text from the Wikipedia page on the The Great Dictator. Whether the author of the article also wrote the Wikipedia article is not mentioned. A large proportion of the content of IrishCentral amounts to or links to clickbait.
