The Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education is a center of distinction at Santa Clara University. Since founding their first school in 1548, the Jesuits have always aimed to provide an education that forms students as whole persons who will change the world for the better. As one of Santa Clara University's three Centers of Distinction, the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education promotes and enhances that distinctively Jesuit, Catholic tradition of education at Santa Clara, through its five signature program: Bannan Institutes, The Thriving Neighbors Initiative, Arrupe Weekly Engagement, The Immersion Program, and Ignatian Spirituality offerings. The Ignatian Center's vision is to be recognized throughout Silicon Valley and beyond as providing leadership for the integration of faith, justice, and the intellectual life.[2]
Bannan Institute
Created in 1982 and named for Louis I. Bannan, S.J., the Institute seeks to improve and enhance the Ignatian spirit in the whole University community: faculty, students, staff, alumni and friends.[3]
The work of the Bannan Institute includes: Bannan Grants to members of the SCU community,[4] the annual explore journal publication, and most significantly the Bannan Institute Series, which are yearlong thematic lectures and programs for the greater campus community.[5] Past Bannan Institutes have explored the themes of Sacred Texts in the Public Sphere (2012-2013), What Good is God? (2013-2014), and Ignatian Leadership (2014-2015). The Bannan Institutes have welcomed such speakers as Marilynne Robinson, Cornel West, Martha Nussbaum, Terry Eagleton, Christian Wiman, Rabbi Abraham Skorka, Sister Simone Campbell, and James Martin, S.J. The center staff has written commentary reaching a wide audience.[6][7]
Thriving Neighbors Initiative
Mentoring of mostly Hispanic, elementary school students is a major part of this program, in a neighborhood where only about one third of the youth finish secondary school.[8]
Arrupe Weekly Engagement
The second department, created in 1986 is named for Pedro Arrupe, S.J.. The mandate of the Arrupe Partnership program is to establish a mutually beneficial partnership between Santa Clara University and the Eastside neighborhood of San Jose, California in order to emphasize the Jesuit concern for justice within the University’s curriculum.[3]
Today the partnership has yielded more than 50 community-based learning (CBL) sites at schools, parishes, and agencies across Silicon Valley where approximately 1,200 students and faculty interact face-to-face with members of the community in programs including: homeless shelters, multilingual/ESL educational programs, law clinics, immigrant service centers, schools, church parishes, health care agencies, and senior centers.[3][9]
Immersion Program
The third department, created in 2005 is named for Peter Hans Kolvenbach, S.J.. The mandate of the Kolvenbach Solidarity Program was to enhance and expand immersion opportunities which had developed across campus since the early 1990s, which had previously been a part of Campus Ministries. The purpose of the immersion experiences is to reflect upon vocational discernment and their place in the world. The program facilitates immersion experiences for approximately 325 participants each year. Immersion experiences occur internationally in El Salvador[10] and Ecuador as well as domestically in New Orleans, Louisiana San Francisco, California, Los Angeles, California, the state of Mississippi, the Appalachia region, and the Navajo Nation in the southwestern United States.
Ignatian Spirituality
Jesuit works are based on an Ignatian spirituality that sees the calling of all to be men and women for others.[11] This spirituality is exhibited in Jesuit outreach in centers which they run worldwide.[12][13]
