iQfx is a family of plug-ins for the RealNetworks players: RealPlayer, RealOne and RealJukebox. These plug-ins were created by QSound Labs and incorporate proprietary digital signal processing algorithms. The foundation feature common to all versions is a stereo sound stage enhancement called QXpander(R) that, according to company claims, proportionately expands the perceived width of the stereo image without undue sonic coloration (e.g. inherent bass and/or volume boosts) and without weakening the critical signal components such as vocals and bass instruments that are normally placed in the center of the mix.
Versions
Version 1
The first plug-in version was simply called iQfx, and was developed from the company's stand-alone consumer software product, iQ. iQfx featured:
- QXpander 3D stereo expansion (for speakers) with a manually or automatically enabled pre-processor for mono content having music and voice modes, and
- QBass(TM), a static Bass Boost feature.
Version 2
iQfx2 had two versions: Basic, with limitations, and a Plus version available for a small cost. It contained several new features:
- QXpander headphones mode
- Variable QBass input gain
- QXciter(TM) spectral enhancement with variable frequency, input gain and boost controls
- QVerb(TM) reverberation simulation with several preset environments
Version 3
The current version of iQfx is iQfx3. iQfx3 features include:
- RealPlayer-like interface
- QXpander for headphones or speakers
- advanced QBass controls - input gain, frequency and boost with increased range
- advanced QXciter controls - input gain, frequency and boost with increased range
- QVerb reverberation simulator with six simulated environments and level control
- Factory and user-programmable presets to save and recall snapshots of all effect settings
