Holy Family School is a Catholic elementary school founded in Port Allen, Louisiana, in 1949 by the Marianites of Holy Cross.[1]
The school opened on September 5, 1949 under the sponsorship of Holy Family Parish. Father Domsdorf, the pastor, welcomed the first principal, Sister Mary Bernadette MSC along with other Marianite Sisters, Sr. Jane Frances and Sr. Paulinus. Grades K-3 had an opening enrollment of 146 students with a tuition of $4.00 per month.
The school quickly grew. In 1950 the fourth and fifth grades were added and in 1951 the sixth grade. Seventh and eighth grades joined the rest of the elementary grades in 1952 and 1953 with a total enrollment of 345 students.
1961 was another growing year when the new building which now houses grades four through eight was opened. Further renovations took place in 1990 when a new library was built. Since then a science lab, an art studio, a computer lab, and a music studio have been added.
The close of the 2006-07 school year brought with it the end of the administration of the Marianites of Holy Cross. Nikki Landry became principal at the beginning of the 2007-08 school year. She is the first lay principal since the opening of the school in 1949.
